What I want to know is: Of all the fora on the SDMB, the Pit seemed to have the least problems. What is/was so “broken” about it* that it required Ed to dive in.

Frankly, from the time Giraffe got input from the SDMB members and revised (or ditched) a bunch of the stupid rules that had accumulated over time, the Pit was (from my POV) just fine.

I think my main source of confusion is: What’s Ed trying to “Fix” with this tinkering.
*Other than the “Lynn decides that hyperbole about Planned Parenthood is a mod-smackdown-worthy offence” debacle that prompted the once-since-then “Non-Pit Rules Thread” rule.

Ed got pissed off at a particularly nasty bout of mod criticism. I forget what the incident that sparked the criticism was (and don’t particularly wish to remember), but he decided he needed to take hold of the reins himself.

I’m also going to stop modding the pit. Not that I was ever a mod, I just like following trends.

I stopped lurking back in 2005 to take part in a pit thread that Frank (then a mod, I believe) started about long-gone Scott Plaid. I haven’t posted all that much in the pit since, but I have enjoyed reading the threads. I think that the moderating by Giraffe and fluiddruid has been outstanding, and that Ed’s brief career in moderating has had anything but a moderating influence.

Thanks to both former mods for excellent work in the pit.

Thanks for all the kind words. Contrapuntal, in particular, I appreciate what you said. I know we’ve been at odds several times over the years, and I was honored by your feedback.

Just to be clear, I’m still moderating (currently over The Game Room and The Barn House), so I’ll still be around. You shouldn’t feel much of a change - I’ve stepped back from reported posts for several months now, this just makes it official.
