About two years ago, Giraffe was coming through Las Vegas and I drove down to have lunch with him.

It’s been explained to me that that’s just the way the software works. You have to ban someone before you can suspend him. And sometimes it takes time for that to work.

Bannings can be for varying lengths of time, from one day to permanent. That automatically changes the poster’s title to ‘BANNED’. An admin has to manually change the title to ‘Suspended’ if appropriate.

The software allows for all sorts of things. vB has a comprehensive suspension/banning/warning system. The admins/mods don’t appear to have utilized it.*

Even without using the bells and whistles of the vB software, all they’d need to do is create another usergroup called SUSPENDED, based off of the BANNED group, and use that for people they suspend. Takes a grand total of five minutes … and that’s only if you’re moving sluggishly.

• Edited to add: well, perhaps they have, but they’re still not using it to its full potential if they haven’t created a ‘suspended’ usergroup.

One might get the impression that, after having been forced, kicking and screaming, into updating the software, the PTB aren’t even bothering figuring out how to use it effectively.

I’m speculating that Bodoni,not wishing to ban Sapo herself, reported a “bad post” to Giraffe in which he declined to take action. Bodoni them must have gone over Giraffe’s head to Dex who complied with her.

No, this isn’t as dramatic as anything like that. There was no falling out with any other mods, no dramatic arguments over a disputed ruling. (I did disagree pretty strongly with several recent actions, but the discussions were always civil and it’s far from the first time that there have been disagreements amongst the mods regarding a ruling.)

Rather, it’s pretty much just the fact that I hold pretty strong views about what kind of forum I’d like the Pit to be if I’m going to moderate it, and these don’t match up with some changes Ed is planning to make. I’m not angry and my leaving isn’t meant to manipulate or sway anything – the job is changing, and I don’t want to do the new one. It’s like if you volunteer at a soup kitchen and all of a sudden they want you to also make sandwiches and you’re like “hell with that, I’ll just go back to being homeless and eating the soup instead of making it” so you quit and then get evicted from your apartment for some reason.

Also, I have to say that the outpouring of compliments and good wishes in this thread caught me off guard. It’s a little overwhelming, in a really nice way. You guys are awesome.
