I subjected myself to "7th Heaven" yesterday

callie, that’s a fair question. Personally, I’m a huge fan of The West Wing, which is chock full of quality messages [looks in Whammo’s direction], but doesn’t sacrifice great writing in the process. Also, Ed is rising in the ranks of “Shows Connor Will Watch”[super]TM[/super].

Its not the positive message that I’m opposing. Its the incredibly terrible vehicle its being delivered in. I grew up watching The Cosby Show. That show was pumping out public service announcements week after week, but did it in an engaging, realistic way (of course, I was about 11 at the time). 7th Heaven is predictable schlock that makes no attempt to scrape the piles of sugar off the fluffy icing.

Bullshit. ahh… I mean cite please!

I can think of 2 off the top of my head… 7th heaven and touched by angel (neither of which I am fond of). I am talking positive message shows. Not “a very special episode of Just shoot me where whatsits name thinks they have cancer.” blech…

You are asking for cites in MPSIMS Whammo? The board will never be the same again.

O.K., do you watch soap operas? The villian always gets his or her comeuppance. On every sitcom ever, bad behavior is always punished. On every mystery show ever, the killer is always found and punished. On any teen show ever the virgin never sleeps with her boyfriend.

What T.V. shows are you watching Whammo? I’d love to see them. I especially want to see the one where the husband tries to fool the wife so that he can go the the game and she doesn’t find out about it. Or the one where the girl gets a big head because she got the lead in the school play and then actually goes on to become a big obnoxious star instead of making a fool of herself in front of the whole school. Or how about the one where the straight A student cheats and is not overcome by guilt when he wins a big award.

nonono… thats not what I mean! I’m not sure about what I mean right now… but when I think of it I’ll let you know!

Unless, Mom cheated on her husband…with a swarthy, <gasp> atheist non-family values promoting guy. Heh. That mother reminds me of the devil. She really does scare me.

I’ve seen the show, a few times, it’s SO saccharine sweet, you just want to rip your arm out of its socket just so you’ll have something to hurl at the TV. Happy is the best actor on the show. The cutest too.

I remember the one where the mother and principal were all in a tizzy because little blonde haired blue eyed I forget his name, flipped off his friend. All in fun…but they made a huge ruckus over it. It’s people like this who make the scary sites mentioned in that BBQ thread.

Anyway, any show that promotes “positive” (read: dull) messages is nothing I want to watch. Regularly. I prefer Futurama- where the snu snu is hilarious, the morality of the robots is questionable, and where the fun is.

Whammo? Here’s your cite.

What I find most offensive about the show is that it’s boring. I certainly won’t watch an hour of morality tv just for the sake of morality tv.

Oh man! I risk my reputation on SDMB for THIS?

I like 7th Heaven! Sure it’s corny, but it is supposed to be!

I mean, c’mon! Don’t we need ALL the positive messages that we can see? This is a world where children are walking into their schools and blowing away as many people as they can!

Hello? Anyone there?

7th Heaven (and Touched by an Angel) does NO harm, and MAY do some good! If it bores you, change the channel!

Sheesh!

I was briefly addicted to this show, but I got help.

I hate the Mom. What a sanctimonious prig she is. Ruthie isn’t much better. And with 7 kids, where the hell does she find time to bake anything? All her scenes should be shot in the laundry room. The oldest son was kinda cute though.

Not true. That’s because TV is also loaded with negative messages. Besides, some people appear to be impervious to positive messages.

Actually, I’d say it’s the other way around…

Well then, Mr. Cornpone you’d say wrong. I followed up my assertion with research. Here are the results. I must say, after my hours of research (when I should have been studying), it’s disappointing to see all my hard work sink like a stone to the bottom of the message board. Please, someone go and look. Argue with me. Anything. I’m starting to feel unappreciated.

Yowsa, Jess! I highly encourage people to hit Jess’s thread, a hell of a lot of good research. I’d encourage someone to maybe do a total of hours, which you deliberately left out to aid in the ease of your research. I don’t think it will throw off the results that much, however.

Also, I’d think discussion over the merits of television, and the amount of quality programming would be better suited in her thread (off to GD, I would guess). This thread will remain a bastion of ridiculing terrible shows and their glurge-filled messages of happiness (read: destined to sink immediately).

Again, damn good job, Jess!

I object to the show’s ham-handed melodramatics illustrating the Perils of Adolesence ™. Like Mom’s old boyfriend’s being a victim of reefer-madness induced vehicular defenestration, any time a P of A is featured, a character with three scenes’ worth of backstory is sacrificed for a “teachable moment.” E.g., the girl who gets hooked on dietary supplements with epinephrine, subsequently succumbing to a heart attack on the basketball court.

You can’t teach a child about real-life dangers with a live-action Edward Gorey cartoon. Soccer-mom porn, anyone?
