There has been much speculation surrounding the man who delivered Saddam’s Old-Lady Glasses Speech (OLGS). The experts seem to be leaning toward the conclusion it is really SH himself. I happen to agree.
But no one is certain if the OLGS was taped or live. If it was taped, that would give the Saddam-is-dead theory more merit given that 1. administration sources say that he was definately in the building that was struck with missiles in the opening hours of the war, and 2. that no one has heard a peep from Saddam other than the OLGS.
I say the OLGS was taped.
Why the glasses and not his usual contacts? Why the stenopad notes, not his usual cue cards? Why the blase delivery, not the usual fire-and-brimstone blather? Why the ultra-crappy stage set (remember, the jellyfish kitchen curtains) and not something a little better looking.
Well, I’ll tell you why. The OLGS was a videotape of a REHEARSAL – that’s right, a rehearsal – of a future video or radio broadcast. A broadcast that never came to pass, because Saddam is injured… or DEAD! [Cue dramatic music.]
(Uh oh. I just got through typing this and realized this might be a Great Debate. Or maybe not. Move it if you like, guys. And gals.)
Sounds reasonable to me. I am hearing blather on the local radio that there are some serious doubts as to Sodomy’s health and wellfare. Witness’ report seeing him getting hualed out of the target area on a gurney with oxygen being administered, and an ex-girlfriend or female companion in exile says the OLGS dude is definatly a fake. (sorry, no cites, heard it from the radio, and they said the reports were “uncomfirmed” anyway. So really, I’m just talkin’ out my ass! :D)

My personal theory is that the guy giving the OLGS was not Hussein, but an alien replicant (a la X-Files). He got the basics right - looked something like the guy, did a good vocal impersonation; but he got a lot of the little things wrong (as one would expect of someone only casually acquainted with humankind). He didn’t quite get that there’s supposed to be a melodramatic aspect to the speech (hence the bored delivery). He’d seen plenty of humans wearing big, ugly glasses, so he figured they were just a colorful accessory, and he might as well try a pair.
If you’re wondering WHY a shape-shifting alien would choose this particular human to replace - well, how better to start the massive take-over of earth than by thwarting a big ole military strike! The coalition forces are going to be pretty mystified when they finally catch the alien, and it morphs back into its normal state of pure energy. The humans will be a cinch to subdue after they’ve seen that.
I think it would be funny that he’d mention a future date if it were a rehearsal.

I don’t think it was taped ahead of time as one of several different tapes that might be shown depending on what developed - he’s been too busy a guy the past few days to spend a lot of time making fake tapes.

There’s another thread about this in GD, and someone suggested that the wierd glasses indicated that Saddam hadn’t had time to put his contact lenses in - the poster was arguing that this showed Saddam was alive because if it was a pre-recording he would have looked more manicured…but I think your theory is better.
Probably just one of his doubles. He has many of them. The New York Times Online has a link where it shows how they tell the difference betewen the real Saddam and the fake ones, and it has a game at the end where you try to figure out which is the real one out of four pictures.
The media and the government is saying it’s taped. They also wonder if it was made before or after.
The problem is, the speech was so vague (“WE hate you, you will die”) as to not be useful in that regard. It could have been taped anything in the last couple months. All of the recent appearences have been taped as well, IIRC. None have so much as mentioned the missle attack on his bunker.
The other thing is that the government has been saying the iraqi war effort looks very disorganized and that iraqi leaders are fleeing west.
If these are true, it would suggest that Saddam is either dead, or not able to control his military, for whatever reason. Even if alive and well, not being able to coordinate your military is a very bad thing when the enemy is well coordinated.
CBS interviewed one of Saddam’s son’s ex-bodydouble, and he says that it’s not Saddam. We know that Saddam has at least four body doubles, so until we have five severed heads which all look like him, I don’t think that we should give up looking for him.

One question, though (to anybody…not necessarily the OP): I heard on the radio yesterday that they had definitely confirmed through voice analysis that it was Saddam speaking, but had not yet determined if it was a tape or live. (Sorry, no cite for this either; just heard it on a local radio news station.)
Has this pronouncement already been disproven? I admit, I didn’t hear much afterwards (being at work) so a million other theories could have sprung up after this.
I don’t know if he’s dead or not…but if not, he seems to be letting his end of the fighting back look a little shabby. Not that that’s a bad thing…
