It’s the same for the tiny size of 100x100.
But you’re right. According to this thread maybe 100x100 is too much the smartest, hippest people on the planet, plus a few total dipsticks.

Testing.
Testing again. ETA: It worked!
Burpo…so cute!
what happened?
Papyrus subtitles FTW.
My suggestion is an homage to the master. Maybe something like this:
At 50x50 a lot of detail gets lost but if/when we go to 75x75 or 100x100 it will be quite clear.
How are you seeing that? When I check the URL of the images, I just see https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/image.php?u=149499&dateline=1533792986 And that is the exact URL I used to download the image to resave it as a PNG.
You can’t see the filename from the broken image in Chrome but if you view one of his posts in another browser that displays it, you can ‘save image as…’ and see what the filename is.
Note that if you follow the link you posted in Chrome though, you will get this error:
“boards.straightdope.com sent an invalid response.
ERR_RESPONSE_HEADERS_MULTIPLE_CONTENT_DISPOSITION”
That error almost always means there is a comma in the filename. That is what led me to look for what the filename was.
Test.
I also went for the obvious.
Even at 50/50 that’s pretty happening! Thanks!
I’d say that makes more sense to retroactively be Cecil’s avatar. Generic avatars are usually something more like a grayed out silhouette or something, making it clear they didn’t select it themselves.
Also, when dealing with smaller files, there’s stuff you can do to make them more clear. At my zoom level, I can much more easily tell what this is.
You mean something like this, which is the same as what’s displayed in people’s profiles for “Friends” that don’t have an avatar/profile pic.
If every user with no avatar has an homage to the master (not necessarily that image mind you, although I like that one) it will be quite clear they didn’t select it themselves. Yes I didn’t enhance the example image at all but with a little brightening and possibly changing the grey background color to white it can be made much more clear even at 50x50.
Of course the obvious choice is some generic grayed out silhouette, that’s why my suggestion is something other than the obvious choice.
Avatars are looking good on Tapatalk.
I’d be more inclined to make the Cecil-turkey exclusive to Friends of Cecil-level members. Make it the special one, not the generic one.
The problem with that is that anyone can make it their avatar anyway, so if it were positioned to be some sort of exclusive perk others would just use it because they could. That could be modded I suppose but I doubt the mods really want to have to police avatars, at least beyond anything that is patently offensive or jerkish.
Tasting, one two three, tasting…
Thank you to all who put in the time and effort to solve the Broken-Image mystery! As it turned out, Crazyhorse was right about the comma.
So simple a thing! I’m grateful to know—who knows, this could come up again in some other context, and I’ll know to look at the file name.
Yep. I wanted an avatar that connected with something I’ve made, but at the same time I assumed we can’t use avatars to advertise (anything). So I swirled it to make it recognizable to me, but not to others.
Thanks again, all! (Including others who weighed in but weren’t quoted here.)
Turned out it’s very unobjectionable–attractive, even:
