The Daily Show makes fun of too many sacred cows to really be fully embraced in the way that, say, Friends was. If that changes (e.g. if John Stewart loses his balls in a tragic woodworking accident), I could see it becoming yet another object of derision. It’ll be interesting to see how he handles the next administration, one that he obviously supports at least a fair amount. He needs to make sure that he hits hard on Obama’s true faults and gaffes (and not the superficial ones) to really maintain his standing.
In jazz’ case, it’s largely because no one but the hardcore listens to jazz, and they are no longer seen as some deep in-fraternity. They’re just nerds, no better than tech nerds or comic nerds or history nerds.
This is my variation on the OP’s theme, if you will: “I wasn’t aware that something so sophisticated was no longer considered as such.”
I confess when I got into Idaho Falls at around 9 PM and all the local joints were closing I was quite happy knowing that the Olive Garden was open until 10PM. My wife and I had a pretty good dinner, a nice bottle of wine and a lovely evening doing what husband’s and wife’s do together with the window open on the 7th floor of the Red Lion Inn and a view of the brilliantly lit Mormon Temple across the Falls.
It depends on what the reasoning is. I wouldn’t brush all the apparent hate for what is popular as elitism. Sometimes people that say things like this can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t like whatever popular band there is. Sometimes people just don’t like the style that is popular. Sometimes people get enjoyement out of exposing their freinds to new styles and ideas. Sometimes its because there is an association with other things they don’t like. I just like what I like and don’t care what others think, but I have often been accused of simply not liking things because they are popular.
Of course there is also the reverse, where the only reason people like things is because they are popular.
Yes! Crocs are my favorite “shoe”. I own 4 or 5 pairs. Everyone bugged me about them, I gave a bunch for Christmas and birthdays in the last couple of years, even “Cousin Red” (the true Alberta Redneck) loves his pair. Well around the farm and at home.
The reason I own 4 or 5 hot pink pairs is because when the family comes here, they all steal mine to wear. They are the most comfortable shoe ever.
I understand that someone can not like a popular band or movie or book. But some people never give popular stuff a chance, they hate it without ever looking into it.
Strange, yes. Regrettable. But understandable. It almost always has less to do with the content of the popular thing than it does with the kind of people we think are into it - the world it reminds us of.
Olive Garden serves up pasta and scaloppine and chianti that are the equal of a lot of neighborhood joints. But the menu and the decor and, you start to feel, the whole enterprise are plastic-coated and standardized. They remind us of the mallification of America, and the triumph of marketing above all. We feel like some empty consumer ninny, only here to consume what is marketed to it. And once you notice all that, it is always going to make your food taste worse.
So yes, we (I too) hate a lot of popular things. Some are genuine shoddy mass-produced crap. But others are crap partly, or largely, by association.
Yeah…but the same could be said of Boston, Aerosmith, AC/DC, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Probably Nickelback’s problem is the singer looks like a douchebag.
A few people have mentioned hatred of CAD and it’s not just the lame over explanation of the jokes it’s the fact the artist is a huge tool as well. He bans people from his forums for criticizing him making it just an echo chamber of how great he is. He’s been caught vandalizing wikipedia articles of other webcomics and even went so far to vandalize his own and then go moan about how harassed and stalked he is. Instead of supporting Penny Arcade’s Child’s Play charity he started his own to compete with it. And last but not least he sent photos of his penis to an underage girl he was having an online relationship with (also when this came to light in his forums he not only banned those that were cursing him out over it but banned ANYONE who had posted to that thread even in support of him).
Now just to be clear I don’t have much firsthand knowledge of any of this but I have seen it referred to on a few sites so even if some of it isn’t true or is overblown it gives plenty of people to hate the comic for it’s rather uninspired humor but really hate the artist for who he is.
