"I was not aware I'm supposed to hate that."

When I hear certain songs I usually say “oh, is this BostonForeignerEurope?” But yes, I think Nickelback’s biggest problem is the explicit doucheriness of the lead singer.

The same could be said of Boston, Aerosmith, AC/DC, and Red Hot Chili Peppers…

(Well, OK, I have no idea what the lead singer of Boston looks like, and Keidis, it depends on when you’re talking about, but I stand by the statement for Tyler and Johnson.)

Yeah ‘between sips of coke’ it has a great illustration of the fan that he’s talking about.

The lead singer of Boston. It’s cool, you’re covered.

Ex-lead singer. He’s died last year. :frowning:

Oh.

Well, now I feel kind of douchey. :smack:

Yeah, they can be, and they can get a bit…funky. But I’ve got 3 pair now, so I rotate between 'em. And they make some with a type of antimicrobial material to limit the funk factor.

Armageddon. The movie. Yes, I enjoyed it. I don’t own it on DVD or anything like that. But I watched it on HBO. Twice, even. And I don’t have the urge to request my time watching it to be added back onto my life. But from the hate I commonly read on the Dope for this movie, you’d think it was the worst film ever made. Nope, I would reserve that distinction for Anchorman. For that film, I do want my 90 minutes back.

I think it’s less “hating on what’s popular” and more “hating what’s popular, and what’s perceived to be mediocre.” Looking through the thread, I don’t see many examples of things that are terrible, but I do see a lot of things that are bland or derivative: Olive Garden, Nickelback, CAD, Bon Jovi. Those are all competant at what they do, but aren’t really exceptional in any way.

I agree completely. With respect to the Olive Garden, I’d much rather go to a nice local italian restraunt. A local place will have a variety I don’t know and a less bland flavor. On the otherhand, there are many local italian resteraunts that I thought were awful. In fact, I would say in some cases, their sauces were canned and pasta mushy. This will never happen at the Olive Garden. Andy Warhol really got it right. Sometimes the canned soup is very appealing because it is always exactly what you expect.

[sub]I liked I, Robot[/sub]

I never really got the hatred of the CAD stuff, I just knew of people hating on him for him just being HIM (so author issues). However, CAD the comic got a TON of minus points for doing it’s abortion storyline, that’s where a lot of the derision for the comic comes from. That comic and his long explanation of it. (I recall there was a Cyanide and Happiness comic parodying it where they simply just quoted him verbatim for the last panel from his news post). That storyline has gotten him quite a few detractors

Same here. Once I grokked that it was supposed to be a completely different story from the Aasimov book, I treated it on its own merits and found it enjoyable. (Really, it says “Inspired by” not “Based on”. Means they took the concept of the Three Laws and maybe some other stuff and built a new story around it.)

I saw an old 60’s The Outer Limits rerun of “I, Robot” and it didn’t even mention the Three Laws. It was a decent episode, but I don’t think it was much like the story either.

That was based on the story by Eando Binder, not Asimov’s book.

(Ironically, the movie was closer to the Binder story than the Asimov book, too…)

I may be getting whooshed here but the Outer Limits episode was based on the Otto Binder short story called “I, Robot”, not the collection of Asimov short stories called I, Robot.

No, I was honestly ignorant of the earlier story. I’d read the Asimov one years ago.

That was kind of the last straw for me. I’d been leaning out the door on the comic because of some of the criticisms I’d read of it, and had to admit they had a point. It’s more a case of reevaluating something I’d been reading mostly out of habit and seeing it through fresh eyes. But the miscarriage thing was just unearned pathos, out of place in the comic and incompetently written. Haven’t been back since.
