"I was not aware I'm supposed to hate that."

More Than A Feeling.

I love Bon Jovi & Dane Cook unironically. And while Ctrl-Alt-Del is not one of my regular webcomics, I respect his willingness to mix weird humor & serious subject matter (which pisses off people who annoy me).

I don’t care that I’m supposed to hate them.

I’m a fan of the Church. I must be doubly uncool.

Hey, I’m a Steve Ditko fan, & Objectivism scares me. I liked Mr. A’s talk-villains-to-death M.O., tho’.

Also, the local Italian restaurant is likely cheaper than the Olive Garden. If you need a really good reason to hate Olive Garden, hate it because it’s way overpriced for what you get.

(Not picking on you here foolsguinea, I think I may have created a misunderstanding and your post is the most recent).

That’s kinda the point of the thread, stuff you like, but found out that, for whatever reason it’s completely hated. The post above about all the stuff not being bad but really just “mediocre” is the point, the stuff ISN’T terrible, but it’s met with a seething hatred for no given reason other than it is there to mock and is possibly an easy target because it’s not quite as popular as the competition (or “it’s popular now it sucks,” either way).

After reading the thread on last night’s Simpsons episodes, it seems like the Simpsons are also now one of those things I’m “supposed to hate.” I don’t get people who watch the show out of habit and nitpick every episode to death. I watch it to put my brain in neutral and idle it for awhile. I expect to be entertained, and still am for the most part, after 20 years. I definitely don’t feel the hate at all.

I never understood the vitrol against Vanilla Ice, let alone the sheer lengths some people have gone to mock and ridicule him at every turn. From what I’ve seen of his career, he’s one of hundreds of musical flashes in the pan to hit it huge briefly then completely fizzle out. Shoot, the Spice Girls never got this kind of derision, and they lasted a LOT longer.

I completely don’t get all the hatred of Michael Moore, here more than anywhere. Nearly everything he’s done has been completely on-target, and the overwhelming majority of the things he “made up” were ridiculously petty details that had nothing to do with the main message. For crying out loud, you support George W. Bush?

Not only don’t I understand all the hatred for Michelle Wie, I don’t even see what’s so unusual here. It’s bizarre for an inexperienced, overhyped athlete with all the pressure in the world not to have at least one monumentally sucky season. Dear lord, have we been that spoiled by Michael Phelps? They take their lumps, they grumble a bit, they learn, and they come back stronger than ever.

As for The Beatles…maybe it’s lingering bias from the most recent American Idol and that enormously entertaining Cirque du Soleil show I saw a few weeks back, but I don’t see why anyone now should harbor extreme hatred or love for them. From what I’ve heard, they had lots of catchy, fun, listenable rock 'n roll with brief forays into the sociopolitical (which, let’s face it, was all but unavoidable for any prominent band in the late 60’s). They were my parent’s equivalent of Dire Straits, Huey Lewis and the News, or The Vapors, no more, no less. (And while I admittedly don’t know the whole story, I’m also a bit puzzled as to the hatred this Yoko Ono character has generated…from what I heard, she at most sped up the inevitable.)

You ever see a person who is nominally on your side, but is so annoying and loud and skeezy you honestly wish he was working for the opposition? That’s Michael Moore for a lot of people. He’s a gigantic blowhard who makes things up to punch up his documentaries. Whether you think those things are minor is beside the point: We’ve been trained from a young age to think documentaries are sacred and that adding fiction to them is simple lying. Asking if we support GWB because we don’t like Michael Moore sounds like something Moore would do, which is another reason people don’t like him: He tends towards demagoguery and oversimplification.

In fairness, you’re talking about a movie based on the idea that it’s easier to teach oil drillers to travel to outer space than it is to teach astronauts to work a drill.
But don’t listen to me. I own three albums by Matchbox Twenty, so I’m clearly a tool.

Ah! I finally get what Yahtzee was referring to now.

Tom Cruise. I think he’s a very good actor and I really enjoy his movies. Is he a nutbag? I don’t care. Has he kidnapped his wife? I don’t know, and I shouldn’t. I like his goddam movies. And he’s purdy to look at.

Exactly why I hate Michael Moore. And Richard Dawkins too. Even if you have truth and logic on your side, that’s no reason to be a total asshole.

I’m drifting away from CAD not because of the miscarriage storyline but because it’s generally becoming less funny, and the “Choose Your Own Storyline” thing is irritating. I don’t hate it with a burning loathing though.

I liked Starship Troopers (The Movie). I will never read the book.

I’m not supposed to like the greatist group of all time?

I never knew.

My kids probably laugh behind my back.

Yourself or Someone Like You is the best album of the last 15 years. I await the day when the musical snobs realize that. Oh, and they will, they will.

Wow. I had no idea until this moment that I was supposed to hate those. Now I know why it takes me so long to shop for a pair of pants. To me, a flat front looks like you should be renting out advertising space on your pelvis.

Thomas Kinkaide paintings. If you like them, you like them. Ok, they’re brightly colored and unrealistic. Should I instead hang a picture of a Campbell’s Soup can on my wall? Is that art? Is it??

Seconded. Specifically the Bee Gees.

The first time I saw Dane Cook it was his standup routine (the one where the audience surrounds him and he moves around a lot)

I thought it was a pretty good standup routine.

The second time I saw him was that movie about him working in a Shopping Center and trying to win the heart of Jessica Simpson.

I thought that was a pretty enjoyable movie.

Alright… I’ve always kept quiet about it…
But I secretly like Kid Rock. I went to one of his live shows, way back in like 2002 or so, before he was making the more rock heavy albums he’s been doing, and he blew me away with how he played every instrument, the turntables, and did a medley of Motown classics from Detroit along with Cat scratch fever and a few other D hits.

Also, I really liked the honesty he sorta put out there in “Black chick, White guy” (it might be the reverse title but still). I hadn’t really heard that sorta openness out there by an artist before.
Of course that was back in 2000 when it was cool to like nu-metal and artists like him.
But since then, people seem to REALLY hate the guy, and he IS cocky and a show-off and a lot of the other things people level at the guy- but for some reason, I still really enjoy his MUSIC. Don’t really care about the personal issues and life, as long as he makes enjoyable music and backs it up with fun live shows. (picked up Live Trucker on a whim, as I had all the songs on the album, but it was 5 bucks- it’s now one of my most played albums, as it’s quite different than just the album versions). So yeah… I liked him, and then I was supposed to hate him I suppose, I just never did.
