It gives a tiny glimmer of hope that they’ll eventually get around to enhancing Planescape: Torment.
I’d still like to see the old Gold Box games remade a la Icewind Dale/Baldur’s Gate…
Yeah, that seems like the obvious place to start to me.
You might also check into Obsidian’s game now in beta Pillars of Eternity. It’s specifically inspired by the Baldur’s Gate/Icewind Dale story-driven questing games of the 90s.
They put it up on Kickstarter and it got $4million in a month … !
Opposite!
The Infinity Engine was a big step down from the gold box games IMO. I’d rather see the gold box games remade with with a modern UI, and Baldur’s Gate etc. remade as proper turn-based games.
Yeah, they got my money. But I haven’t even finished Divinity: Original Sin yet. And Wasteland 2 is coming out soon. And Tides of Numenera which seems to be getting worked on by a lot of the same people and also claiming to be a spiritual successor to Planscape: Torment. My cup runneth over.
I still consider Planescape: Torment the best game of its era. Better than the Baldur’s Gates, better than the Fallouts, better than Icewind Dale and its expansions. But those other games I’ve actually managed to re-play, some multiple times. But the experience of playing Planescape: Torment a second time eludes me. I can’t ever play it for the first time again. But if they upgrade the interface I’ll damned sure try. I’ll have to make due with its successors.
Hell, I’d just like to replay those games with a damned auto-mapper and an automated quest tracking log.
I never liked the ID games as much as the BDs. Too dungeon-focused. For my money, it unbalanced the gameplay.
Speaking of the Gold Box games, apparently some of the people from SSI are putting out a new game:
