Iconic comedy props

[struggles to read from cue card]

I… don’t… know,… he… didn’t… say?

Dave Allen.

… and may your god go with you.

The moment I read the thread title, this popped into my mind…

An 18" replica of Stonehenge.

I think you mean Steve Allen.
Good call on the miniature Stonehenge.
Also an amplifier volume knob that “goes to 11”.

How about George Burns’ cigar?

Redd Foxx’s titty mug

titty-mug?

And I’m entirely certain I don’t.
Dave Allen: funny, suave, urbane, sat on a stool sipping whiskey. Missing part of a finger.

Steve Allen: who?

If the first and only thing you think of when you see a cigar is George Burns, then there’s a Dr Freud who’d like a word with you.

How’s about:

Glass of whisky and tall stool?

Dave Allen (at Large)

That’s the guy. In the early-to-mid-'70s, our local PBS affiliate had reruns of his half-hour show (just him in the chair telling jokes; no sketches) paired with reruns of Benny Hill. I watched 'em both. Allen looks much older in the Wiki photo than I remember him. Sorry to hear that he died two years ago.

And how come no one’s mentioned Gallagher’s sledgehammer, let alone his watermelon?

Sand

Johnny Carson’s turban and envelope.

Howie Mandell.

Arte Johnson’s tricycle (Laugh-In).

Flip Wilson’s flip wig as part of his recurring Geraldine character’s drag outfit.

Art Carney’s vest w/ t-shirt (he did it before Schneider on One Day at a Time).

I’m showing my age, aren’t I?

Judy Tenuta’s specifically wacky outfits.

Paula Poundstone’s neckties.

Also, Tiny Tim’s ukelele, but that was an unfunny, one-trick pony, if ever there was one.

I thought comedy was a bit more international than turns out to be the case.

You’re not kidding. Just out of interest, I’ve kept a running tally of how well-known some of these are in the UK (feel free to quibble).

Not at all:
Gallagher
Andrew Dice Clay
Sung Hee Park
Ruth Buzzi
Will Rogers
Carrot Top
Henny Youngman
The Amazing Jonathan
Bobby Clark
Carol Burnett
Soupy Sales
Ernie Kovacs
Pee Wee Herman
Minnie Pearl
Mark Russell
Jim Gaffigan
Steve Allen
Redd Foxx
Charlie McCarthy
Arte Johnson
Flip Wilson
Art Carney
Judy Tenuta
Paula Poundstone

Vaguely:
M. Hulot – film buffs will know him, but not many others.
Rowan and Martin – mostly those of us old enough to remember the 60s.
Lily Tomlin – from two or three mildly successful films in the 80s (or if you’re old enough to remember Laugh-In).
Spike Jones – his records still get played, but most people wouldn’t know what he looked like.
Johnny Carson – probably. Around long enough and referenced enough to be a recognisable name, but not what you’d call familiar.
Howie Mandell – I recognise the face, but…
Tiny Tim – one novelty record.

Yes, but not with that prop:
Steve Martin – only his films, really. Arrows-in-head not much in evidence.
John Belushi – ditto. SNL was never broadcast here.
Tracy Ullman – used to be on a popular sketch show. Moved to America and rose to obscurity.
Bob Newhart – mostly his records. I don’t think his sitcoms ever got here. For anyone younger than me he’s probably a “vaguely” or a “not at all”.

paper bag with three little holes in it.

Dick Cheney’s dummy.

Will Rogers and Carrot Top, I’ve heard of, maybe watched a clip on YouTube.

Pee Wee Herman, I happen to know was in a series of those movies where American College kids get up to bawdy hijinks, or something very much like that. I’ve seen one such film (which also happens to be one too many), but not one with Pee Wee Herman in it.

Redd Foxx - have heard of, but have no idea beyond that

Gee, I came in here to nominate her accordion.

For the “tall stool and glass of whiskey,” I wanted to add “and a cigarette” and choose Ron White. (Maybe add “shit-eating grin” too. )

Paper bag with three little holes: The Unknown Comic.

For Pee-Wee Herman, also those ridiculously high-heeled white platform shoes.

I forgot that! The outfit [del]distracted[/del] blinded me!
