I'd rather pay someone to do that in the MMP

I routinely pay to have groceries and such delivered when I really could go fetch stuff myself, just don’t want to. With our current car, DIY oil changes are not really feasible, especially since DH isn’t as agile or flexible as he used to be (he’ll be 60 in November), so the nice guys at PepBoys make money off us (I’m qualmy about quickie places like JiffyLube, DH humors me).

Afternoon all. Moanday shopping has been completed (some veggies, bread, milk and bananas) and I’ve worked on my February shopping list, probably go Thorsday. An afternoon of sloth is planned.

Butters, fingers remained crossed for you.

shoe, Bumba, used to get that ‘lake effect’ snow when I lived in N. Ohio, seemed almost a waste of time to shovel because you’d have to do it again in a couple hours, but when Mom said to…

OK, onward.

I’m very lucky in that I make a decent salary, and have neither dependents nor debt. I’m also very lazy. Currently I pay for house cleaning (every other week), a yard company (mowing and leaf removal), gutter cleaning, and quarterly pest control. I pay my dog’s daycare to handle her nail trims, brushouts, and baths. Nearly all of the car stuff is also outsourced: the only things I do myself are refill the gas tank, put air in the tires whenever the TPS says to, and sometimes vacuum/dust the interior (only because the car wash stopped offering interior vacuuming when the pandemic started). More often than not, I have my groceries delivered. And now that I’ve gotten a taste of paying a neighborhood kid to shovel my sidewalks, that might become a thing whenever we get more than ~1" of snow.

My big wish, though – as others have mentioned – is to have a personal chef. I want someone who will shop for and prepare all of my meals, and make them both healthy and yummy while catering to my pickiness preferences (and post-op requirements). This is one of my “when I win the lottery” dreams.

Thank y’all for the positive comments about my musical/weight loss updates. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Leftovers from the previous thread…

I always wanted to be someone’s imaginary friend!

When I was a tech writer there weren’t any certifications (though there are now); when I was a proposal manager, I got a cert from the Association of Proposal Management Professionals (APMP). It’s been a while since I got that one, though, and I’ve been in project management for almost two years now, so I don’t mind the study/classes for one more piece of paper. This is likely to be it, though: if I change careers again, too bad…no more certs.

I am sooooo living vicariously through you!!

I’m having a hard time doing things. I did manage to do this though.

Dammit I miss him. Sorry for the bummer.

I bought that same frame for a friend several years ago, after his dog died: I printed a photo of his pup and put it in the frame before I gave it to him. :blue_heart:

Had an immensely dull day of classes, which was very frustrating, as I have assignments I should be working on. You know it’s boring when I’d really rather be back doing my stats homework…

Not BooFae, but I’ve spent enough time on those sort of roads that I can’t resist giving my version of the answer; there’s no real rules, except that people with shiny shiny 4wds will never pull over onto anything that isn’t clean tarmac.

There are a few customs though. If there is a space between you when you spot the oncoming driver, as you guessed, whoever gets there first waits for the other to pass.

The tricky bit comes when there is not a space between you, so someone has to back up.

Generally, one is expected to allow others to pass if it would be easier for you to make the necessary manoeuvre than for them- if there’s a place visible behind you, but they would have to reverse around a blind bend, it’s bad manners to not back up. If there are multiple vehicles, back up. If the oncoming vehicle is a tractor or has a trailer, back up. If it’s a tractor pulling a muck-spreader, do not not even think about doing anything other than getting out the way.

If they flash headlights at you- regardless of what the Highway Code states, this is an invitation to keep driving, because they intend to get out of the way or believe there is space to pass where they are.

If someone else allows you to pass, one must acknowledge this by a wave, involving an proportionate amount of effort into the wave to the effort taken to let you pass. Simply stopping a few seconds may warrant the mere lifting of a finger (not middle) and slight incline of the head, while a proper nod and full hand wave would be required for anything more skilful or a longer wait.

Personally, I don’t use such roads if I need to be anywhere in a hurry, and I more-or-less give way to everyone, unless there are cars behind me, making it impractical to do so. It tends to sort itself out. Oncoming cars are the least of the hazards- you’ll often encounter livestock being moved between fields, and they sure aren’t pulling over.

It may help to remember that many of the people using such roads are locals who are all up in each other’s business, so being a rude driver without good reason may have consequences.

I would very much like this. How did you find these marvelous folks?

Aren’t they all acoustic? :stuck_out_tongue: (I think there’s a tuna cat joke in here somewhere - maybe Doggio can find it)

As opposed to…

House shopping is the pits. I hope you hear something soon.

I’m so sorry. I know exactly how you feel. I still tear up all the time over Pixel. I’m not sure that I’ve ever missed a lost pet this much before. In any case, my condolences and long distance hugs.

I really would like a housekeeper. A full-time housekeeper, who could handle the cleaning, the cooking, the shopping, the organizing, all of it. I just can’t manage it any more.

'Beamer went to school. Hubby has tested clear of the plague. I am still infested, as is 'Beamette. We’re both improving. My doctor has prescribed a daily use inhaler to use in addition to my rescue inhaler. I hope to be done with this soon. I think H1N1 made me much sicker, but this was not fun.

Happy Monday everyone!

In Texas, proper manners also involve the other driver giving a “you’re welcome” nod/finger/wave as well, in proportion to the “thank you” given.

Thanks for the explanation, Nut! I assume there’s not enough traffic in these areas to warrant a 2-lane road, hence the pull-offs. We’ve been watching Shetland and there was an aerial view that showed several miles with a number of these places that seemed to be evenly spaced.

Chore update - I just finished playing lumberjack, and I’ve cut up the largest branches and stacked the logs on the wood rack. There are lots of random smaller branches that I may or may not cut up. They may just be dragged into the woods to rot. But not today. I’s tahred! And sweaty, even tho it’s just 42° out there. I worked hard!

Supper will be the beef I cooked sous vide yesterday, sliced up with onions and shrooms and drowned in gravy, served over noodles or rice. Maybe a side of carrots.

FCD’s tooth extraction has been moved up to tomorrow morning. It shouldn’t take long, after which we’ll swing by and pick up Toby so SIL can get to work on time. Fun, fun.

VanGo - love the pic!

This is more optional- if you put effort into pulling over, you can simply sit there being smug and accept the praise, but a slight gesture of appreciation is acceptable.

There is an odd tiny little road right across from my house that cuts the corner between two larger streets. Difficult to explain, but this is really only one car wide, yet it is used by school busses, it’s a very common way for snow plows to turn around and head back towards town. The lawn services use it to park their trailers while doing work in the area. The road is probably 200 yards long. And a real PITA if’n you meet someone coming the other way. Especially this time of year when there are snow banks.

Afternoon, all! It’s a balmy 65 degrees outside, the sun is shining, the police helicopters are circling and I somehow torqued my back again. Ow.

I’ve gotten to the age where I’d rather pay someone to do a job right than do it myself and spend twice as much to fix the stuff I broke trying to do the job myself. I spent years working on cars as part of the family business. I could field strip a Sentra blindfolded in a snowstorm and do a complete brake job while hanging upside down over a scorpion pit (it was a rough business.) Now I’d rather pay someone to change the oil because I’m too lazy to crawl under the car. Times change…

I had a phone call from the agent wanting to know why my house here in the Keys does not close until a month from today. I was told because the buyer is buying more than one house so I guess my offer is being considered on my Mexican looking house. I have no control over the closing date of this one. But, it’s a done deal. There is $25K in escrow the buyer will lose should he back out. It’s even shown as off market in the MLS. Jeez ppl you’re not gonna get a much quicker close no matter what. I just need to know so I can move on if they aren’t willing to wait.

Still bored silly. I managed to get a load of laundry on. I have not ate today so I guess I should sort that out. I have some chicken thawed so gonna throw together a Thai curry maybe. Or may just air fry it for a sammich. Decisions.

I’ve always been glad of the fact that my life experience has allowed me to take care of most of the home maintenance issues that crop up, especially electrical problems. It’s saved us a bundle over the years. My wife is always happiest when puttering around in the garden and she used to do all the weeding herself. But the arthritis is limiting my hand movement and poorer muscle tone is making other things a real chore. My wife’s back and sciatica is limiting the harder yard chores, so twice a year we have our ‘yard guy’ come over and clean things up. What he does in a couple of days would take us a couple of weeks.

One of the things that’s required for our impending home sale is that all of the wired smoke detectors need to be replaced. A couple of years ago I would have just done it myself, but contorting my neck and shoulders to do that now just isn’t happening. So I have an electrician coming to take care of it, which just really annoys me. I’ll be paying him $500 to do something that would only cost me the price of the detectors. Such is life.

I still like to cook, so I’m not ready to pay someone to do that just yet.

I’ve been trying to get data from one of our members for months. I decided to try a different contact, only too discover by looking her up on LinkedIn that she hasn’t been with the company since 2015! I did get the phone number for my original contact, and left a message. I also contacted our Billing person and the Account Executive to let them know our database needs to be updated.

It mine!

Glad you’re health is improving Sunny.

Your stories about yielding the right of way reminded me of the year I lived on a dairy farm in Northern California. The farmer up the road from us, between us and the main road, had a pasture on the other side of the road from his barn. Twice a day he’d drive his small herd of cows, 40 or 50, about 50 yards down the road from one place to the other. Actually he didn’t really drive them. He’d open the gates and they would amble, at cow speed, to where they needed to go. He would just follow along in his ancient army Jeep just in case. It did no good to honk not that I ever did. I knew about cows. But some people would. It never worked out for those people.

Have a good week everybody.

My original contact emailed me back!

That was the one you were really hoping for? Congratulations!

It’s so pretty! Congratulations!
