Identify this 80s dance song

I think its from the 80s; female vocalist. All I remember is this:

“Can you hear me”
“Can you hear me” (sort of echoed)

then something about “running through the night” or something.

I’m pretty sure this song has been DJed up a few types in dance mixes.

Female vocalist? Not Mike and the Mechanics and “Silent Running”?

Lyrics here

“Words” by Missing Persons?

The opening to this song goes:

Do you hear me?
Do you care?

Probably not it… ?

Sounds like the OP is talking about Silent Running to me as well.

Possible. A quick AMG look shows a cover by “Sandra”. She was the singer for Enigma, her husband’s group. You may have heard the ‘new age’ hit Sadeness; that was her.

The only other cover I see was by “Allan Mcloud” on an electronica compilation.

Here’s another possibility. “Flavor of the Month” by The Posies. I just heard this song on Live 365 and it could be the song, although I wouldn’t call it a dance song. It’s also from 1993. I believe the singer is male, but the voice is high-pitched.

I instantly thought of this mouldy old tune. Possibly there’s a dance mix

I am sailing, I am sailing,
home again 'cross the sea,
I am sailing stormy waters,
To be near you, to be free.

I am flying, I am flying,
Like a bird 'cross the sky
I am flying, passing high clouds
To be with you, to be free.

Can you hear me, can you hear me
Thro’ the dark night far away

I am dying, forever trying,
To be with you who can say.

We are sailing, we are sailing,
Home again 'cross the sea
We are sailing stormy waters
To be near you, to be free.

That “Silent Running” song looks promising, but I’m at school right now so I can’t verify.

BTW, that song is called ‘Sailing.’ It’s been recorded by Leo Sayer and Rod Stewart and possibly others.

I’d like to point out that neither Sailing nor Slient Running are dance songs from the 80s. Just because it was on the radio in the 80s doesn’t make it a dance song, kids.

::scratching head::

How would you dance to either of those songs? I don’t think I could slow dance to either of those songs…

Sailing was originally recorded by the Sutherland brothers, and not a lot of people know that.

Song in question is

‘Running with the night’ Lionel Ritchie, he does the ‘can you hear me’ bit as an ad-lib and its not in the official lyrics

Pish tosh. As a high schooler in the 80s, I danced in a very uncoordinated and spastic way to things much less danceable than Mike and the Mechanics!

My guess? How about - Our Lips Are Sealed by the Go-Go’s, IIRC - the words start with “Can you hear me” or maybe “can you hear them”. Definately a female singer and definately a dance song from the 80’s.

Still doubtful… opening is:

Can you hear them?
They’re talking about us
Telling lies
Well that’s a surprise

no echoes, and nothing else about the night time.

which is why I added the words “maybe there’s a dance mix.”

Unless we’re still not in agreement on the right song, I’d certainly say the song I’m thinking of in my OP is a dance song.

And it’s not the Go-Go’s.

Maybe it’s Kiss the Rain?

I know it’s not an 80’s song, but there’s been a “dance remix” (I use the term loosely, since it’s the same song played a tiny bit faster with a techno backbeat) of this playing at the gym a lot lately.

The first thing I thought of was “Bad Connection” by Yaz.

Although the lyrics are bit different and there is nothing about running through the night, it is a dance hit of the 80’s and has a female vocalist (the wonderful Alison Moyet).

Probably not, but worth a shot.
