Identify this movie for me please

This has been bothering me for a while. I remember seeing a live action movie sometime around 1990-1992. The only things I can remember about it is that it was a fantasy movie, had a giant catepillar thing in it, and I rememeber a scene with 2 guys fencing in front a fireplace. Later they went into the fire place as it was a portal or tunnel into some fantasy world or something another. Pretty vague details, I know, but I’ve been driving myself nuts trying to remember what this movie is. We may have rented it, or I may have been watching it on HBO.

Sounded a bit like ‘Wild Wild West’ until the bit about the fireplace into a fantasy world

My mistake. I thought you said giant spider. Wild Wild West has a giant spider.

giant cattarpillar - BeetleJuice (sp?) or Dune?

Sounds like House 2-The Second Story .

Giant caterpillar-Check. The catterpuppy is several feet long and has the head of a bulldog puppy.

Fencing match-IIRC check.

Portal to otherworlds- All throughout the house. One door leads to a jungle world filled with dinosaurs and giant monsters. John Ratzenberger (Cliff Claven of Cheers) is tracing the wiring to find the short when he discovers a portal to a kind of Incan temple. The electrician is used to such things and carries a fencing foil (I haven’t watched the film in a while. It may have been an epee or sabre) in his tool kit.

Overall, a cheesy little B film. But there were some moments I really liked.

Wasn’t House 2 the one with the really cool looking skeletal horse?

Was it this one?

House 2 had a pair of undead gunslingers. I don’t remember a skeletal horse though.

Miller could you give more details on this emaciated equine? If the horse was a statue being ridden by a human skeleton whith preserved internal organs, you’re likely thinking of the 1999 remake ofHouse On Haunted Hill. The statue was the work of Gunther Von Hagen who invented a method of preservation called plastinization.

DISTURBING IMAGE WARNING!

I submitted that last post before the Gunther link had fully loaded. I did not realize that the page I had linked to included large images from the exhibit. It does. It contains several large images of skinless specimens. The genitals of one specimen are visible in detail- also skinless.

I would e-mail a mod and ask them to add a warning to my post (I don’t think the link is objectionable, or should be removed. But a warning would be nice). But I think they’re busy with plenty of other things due to the coming changes.

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t House 2. The movie I remember wasn’t a horror movie, and I remember the fireplace being in something that was more of a castle than a house. Plus, I don’t recall the caterpillar having the head of a bulldog. If memory serves right, the caterpillar could talk. Oh and I just remembered that the people fencing had to go into the fireplace to rescue some chick (I think). Hrrrm. I’ll read some reviews of House 2 to see if it rings any bells.

I’m fairly positive it wasn’t Titanic.

House 1 was a horror movie. House 2 was more fantasy, action comedy than a horror film.

The house in House 2 was quite a mansion.

Which is exactly what happens after Ratzenberger discovers another dimensional portal behind the drywall. ‘I’m something of an expert in this field. And it looks to me like you’ve got yourselves an interdimensional portal here.’ He then gets his sword from his toolkit and leads the way. He and two tenants find an Aztec style temple and rescue the woman who is about be sacrificed.

IIRC Caterpuppy just barked. They also end up with the hatchling of some giant vulture/pterodactyl which sqawks. The undead Gramps (who dresses, talks, and acts like a stereotypical miner 49 consarn it!) takes a liking to both pets and sometimes gives them beer.

It’s a long shot, but I’ll give it a try: was it The Lair of The White Worm?

I actually considered that while thinking of films that could be described as having a giant caterpillar.

Fencing match- Nope. Though once or twice somebody does take down an ornamental sword to defend themselves.

Talking caterpillar- Dionin who is darkness. Dionin who lived in peace in the garden of Eden, before he was banished by the false god. Dionin doesn’t speak either.

Fireplace portal- No interdimensional portals in White Worm. Though one of the fireplaces may have had a secret passage.

Rescue the girl- Yes, the heroes save the girl from being sacrificed by a blue-skinned serpent woman, who’s donned an ivory strap on for the occasion.

I’d put in the tape and watch it again, but neither of my betas has worked in years.

“And drink the health of good Sir John, who kept the babes from harm
and saved the calves by making halves,
of that awful Dampton worm!”

Alrighty. I’ll rent House 2 the next time I visit Blockbuster.

Long shot, But it wasn’t Spawn was it?

If it’s not the movie you’re looking for, I’m worried.

TWO movies with talking caterpillars, fencing scenes and fireplace portals? I mean, I know Hollywood is losing its edge but that’s just some redundancy that’s uncalled for!

(Please let it be House 2)

No way. Spawn came out in what, 1997-1998? I’m looking for a movie that I know is a few years older than that.
