But you have leveled a serious charge at me, one that I find sickening. So even if you have peaced out, for anyone else that might be reading and wondering if your accusation has merit, I pulled up some quotes from 2016. If I’m only pretending to be a Democrat, I’ve been operating under the most bizarrely pointless and time-consuming deep cover ever.

This is so silly, and unlike a lot of the other claims being made, it is likely to be tested. If I were not so lazy and were more organized, I’d save this for November, to have a chuckle about when Hillary wins by double digits.

I have never failed to vote for a Democratic nominee, and you can be sure that if Bernie were the nominee, that trend would continue. (In fact, recognition of this fact, and the general Democratic loyalty of the Hillary fanbase, was what really galled me when my Bernhead friend called me and said “you and the other Hillary supporters will still reliably vote for any Democrat in the fall, whereas the Bernie supporters won’t, so you should just vote for Bernie in the primary if you want to make sure the Republicans don’t win.” Grrr.)

On July 27, I wrote a broadside against Trump in a thread that’s now closed, so I can’t do a regular reply quote. But I’ll link and manually quote it. This is actually the post I found last; if I had found it first, I might have just stuck with posting only this. There is no plausible world where someone pretending to be a Democrat but secretly trying to get Trump elected would post something like this. It’s not necessary to establish bonafides, and it (IMO) pretty effectively denounces and discredits Trump to any wavering voter who might happen across it:

I feel remiss in earlier today having done my usual thing in terms of poking fun at Trump, without having very seriously addressed the invitation to Russia to commit espionage the moment I first heard about it. I’m distracted, I guess, by the DNC, and of course Trump has “defined deviance down”. But that’s no excuse, and I want to be very emphatic and serious about this right now.

A list of “top ten most outrageous things a major party’s nominee has ever said or done” would almost certainly feature Trump at every position, especially if we are talking about modern political history (since women and racial minorities could participate). But what he said today is number one, AINEC. In any remotely sane world (and I thought, before this year, that I lived in one), his own party would figure out a way of negating his nomination. Or, if that were not legally possible, all elected Republicans (other than maybe a few in the lunatic fringe in the House or state legislatures) would declare the strongest possible condemnation for him and urge their constituents not to vote for him.

In that sane universe, his polling numbers would drop like a stone into the single digits. Maybe Hillary’s wouldn’t rise so much as Johnson’s and “won’t vote that office”. But if this doesn’t happen, then maybe Trump and Bernie were right all along: this country has really gone off on the wrong track. But it can’t be blamed on “Mexicans”, nor on the “one percent”.

So, yes: anyone of any age or race whose sympathies lie left of center (or, arguably, even a little right of center) should be voting for Hillary. If their sympathies are significantly right of center, they may have a tough choice this time around, and I wouldn’t blame them for choosing either way (I’d just blame them for being right wingers to begin with). If they are left of center, and do anything other than vote for Hillary, they are either a fool or a traitor, probably both. And the fundamental point of this thread is that this group includes a lot of college-age kids, although there’s certainly plenty of blame to direct at Bernie Sanders for poisoning impressionable young minds. I have a feeling he knows this, and is feeling a bit sick about it, so hopefully he’ll do his best to make it right–although I’m not sure if he can get that toothpaste back in the tube.

I said it before on the more recent predictions thread. I’m not going to be embarrassed or ashamed that I gave the American people more credit than they deserve. I will cop to being too optimistic, too willing to see the good in people, not contemptuous enough of my fellow citizens’ intelligence and judgment. But that’s not something I feel embarrassed about. Just sad. Unless you mean embarrassed about our country on the world stage. Then yes.

This is not true. Polls showed that somewhat surprisingly more of her voters were voting for her rather than against Trump and it was the Trump side that was voting more against her. Anyway, I like her even though I supported Obama in 2008. I listen to her podcast regularly and find her a warm and appealing person. And my heart breaks for her for all the reasons listed in the OP and more.

I was actually a little shocked by one thing I hadn’t remembered saying. I guess I was reeling in the wake of the shock of Trump’s election:

I just heard a statistic that throws most of the narratives about this election result (the idea of it being a swarm of new blue collar white voters, or Obama voting converts, swarming to the polls) out the window. The only one it preserves is the one about Hillary’s weaknesses.

Trump got over a million fewer votes than Romney did, even though the voting age population has grown in the past four years.

Think about that for a second. Mull it over. What we saw here was not any kind of surge for Trump. It was a bunch of Democrats sitting on their hands, while Republicans did what they do every election including off-year elections: go out and dutifully vote for their party’s candidates. With 20-20 hindsight, I can see that this connects directly with something I complained about months ago, which was that I hardly ever saw anyone wearing a Hillary button or displaying a Hillary bumper sticker or yard sign. She just wasn’t cool, there were many Democrats who never really warmed to her, and they didn’t go to Trump but just stayed home.

So that sucks, but it’s actually not as bad a sign for the future as if there had been millions of defectors to the other side. But it does add an extra condition to the oft-cited idea that Republicans vote every time, and Democrats only vote in presidential years: it’s “presidential years in which there is a really inspiring candidate at the top of the ticket”.

Well, ok. Much easier said than done, but it looks like that had better be what Democrats focus on in future primary races. Maybe it is time to give the left wing of the party a turn. If that turns off too many moderates, then back to the drawing board to find the next Obama who can thread the needle.
