I'm going to San Diego again. Dopefest? Also some questions about SD.

I’m coming to San Diego to teach a class (FEM Structural Nonlinearities; aren’t you sad you’ll be missing that?) from August 8-10 (W-F). I’m staying that Friday and Saturday night (8/10-11) for a little weekend vacation. Do any of you SD Dopers want to get together during that time (Greg Charles, Esprix, I’m talking to you)? Any LA Dopers wanna drive down? Let me know and we’ll make arrangements to meet up.

OK, here’s my question: Will I need a rental car for the weekend? I won’t need one during the week; the place where I’m teaching is right next to the airport and my hotel is walking distance from there, the pier, Little Italy, and the Gas Lamp Quarter. However, I was planning to head up to La Jolla Saturday. Will the trolley get me there (I’m having a tough time finding them on the 'net), or would it be better to rent a car, or something?

Well, I’ve tried to post this twice, but the board is being That Way. Here goes again.

Really the only way to get to La Jolla is by car. The trolley mainly serves parts south and east.

Here’s a map:

From my admittedly limited experience of San Diego, I’d guess you’d be far better with a rental; La Jolla isn’t exactly right beside the airport… Don’t know how efficient public transportation is in SD but, if it’s like in other cities, you’d find yourself with the week-end schedule, and that could mean long waits.

In addition, there are several beautiful beaches in the neighbourhood of La Jolla, and a car would definitely be a plus to carry your from one place to the other.

Also, given that your ‘vacation’ will last a whole two days, your budget can probably accommodate a two-day rental. It’d be kind of sad to spend half of it riding on the bus.

I, personnally, love SD even though its natives usually drive like maniacs.

Here’s a start. Hope it helps. Once you get a quote, I’d suggest that you give the company a call. Sometimes, you’ll save a few bucks dealing directly with a representative (ask for Internet specials, AAA rates (from my experience, doesn’t really matter if you’re not a member), ‘best prices’, etc.)

Good luck and good trip.

Here’s something a bit more detailed:

http://www.travelnow.com/cars/list.jsp?pickUpCity=San+Diego&pickUpStateProvince=CA&pickUpCountry=US&pickUpDay=11&pickUpMonth=7&pickUpYear=2001&pickUpTime=9AM&dropOffDay=12&dropOffMonth=7&dropOffTime=9AM&dropOffYear=2001&company=&classCode=&typeCode=&cityCode=SAN

This was worked under the assumption that you would pick up the car around 9:00 A.M. on Saturday and would be dropping it off the following day around same time. Watch out for pick-up and delivery times; you could be charged an extra day if you’re over an hour (half-hour?) late. Sorry if all of this is nothing new to you: I have no idea of your travelling habits.

link seems to work only partly. Well, you’re half-way there anyhow…

Damn, omni-not, you don’t need to do all that work on my behalf! I greatly appreciate your help though. I’ll probably use that first link you provided. My company usually rents from Hertz, which is too expensive ($45/day, compared to about $27/day at the link you provided).

cher3, you’re in San Diego too, right? Esprix and Greg Charles were the only ones I could remember off the top of my head when I posted the OP. Would you be interested in getting together? I’m going to email Esprix and Greg if they don’t weigh in here.

Thanks to both of you for your feedback!

Gaaack! :frowning: Catching me right in the middle of the Pennsic War, I’m afraid - I’ll be right in the middle of a two-week camping trip in sunny Slippery Rock, PA.

Sorry 'bout that. I won’t see you until the October LA Dopefest if this keeps up…

Esprix

Well, the Farmer lives in San Diego and would be delighted. I work nights and weekends, though, so I don’t know when or if I can make it that weekend.

But if you’ll email at the link below, and keep me posted (I will, of course, check this thread,) then I may be able to take a day off, if it looks like it’s gonna be a go.

Make and confirm your reservations early… hotels do a BOOMING business that weekend in San Diego. I often have to send people as far north as Santa Ana in the summer.

Esprix, a two week camping trip? Given my love of the outdoors, I find that to be an acceptable excuse. See you in October then.

FarmerOak, sounds like you’ll be working when I’m not. I’ll send you an email and maybe we can work something out. I don’t know if it would be worth taking vacation time to meet me, but I’ll leave that up to you.

Greg Charles is never in this forum anymore. I’m going to have to email him.

Thanks for the invitation, but we’ll be and grandma and grandpa’s that weekend. Enjoy your trip!

It would be

San Diego Doper checking in here. Name the time and place and I am there. I’ve seen the Las Vegas dopefest pics so it should be fun meeting you

Don’t you ever stay home? :stuck_out_tongue:

MamaHen, I’ll try to work out something with you and FarmerOak in email. We’ll see if we can get Greg out too.

BunnyGirl

It is my goal to spend no more than three days in Phoenix this summer.

This reminds me of a recent conversation I had with my mom.

Me: I need to score some more trips to San Diego.
Mom: I thought you were sick of business travel.
Me: I was, when I was traveling to south Tucson all the time. Now that I’m traveling to San Diego, I like it.

There ya go.

Jesus Christ, am I on crack?

I’m going to be in San Diego 8/1-5 (Wed-Sun). Change all the dates I posted in this thread to the week before.

(No, I wasn’t in danger of missing the class. I knew it was next week; I just looked at the wrong part of the wall calendar while composing my posts.)

That’s NEXT week!

If you guys stay up/out late on Friday or Saturday, I might be able to make it after 10:00 or 11:00pm.

Plans have been made.

We’re meeting at Dick’s Last Resort in the Gaslamp Quarter Friday, 8/3 at 7PM. They feature Southern food, beers from all over the world, a good horn band, and matchbooks with pictures of boobies on the covers. Sigh It’s like home to me.
