I'm not renewing my subscription.

Mr. Moto, I recognize your user name.

That is all I know about you. You might be a nice guy, you might be the guy that stole my sweet-ass stereo in '96. I don’t care either way. From a completely selfish POV, I really only care what you have to offer me in terms of knowledge.

I found this site because of a need for information, I come back to it for the same. I hope that both of my own posts that benefited people were worth something.

This site has a lot more to offer than debates, arguments, whining, “my cat made the cutest face today” threads, and Dr. Who worship threads. I’ve learned more from my dozens of hours here, than I would have if I’d been reading an encyclopedia, because I like it.

I really don’t care if you stay or if you go ( no offense), but try going a week without going into GD or the Pit or whatever else forum you can’t stand. Think of a really good GQ question and post it. If after a week of that you feel that your $8 is better spent elsewhere, then Vaya Con Dios. If you’re willing to spend the price of a movie in order to have access to such a wealth of information, do so, and we will never speak of this again.

Take a break from reading and posting in political threads. It’s a big board, there’s lots of other subjects you can discuss, right?
I’d like to see you stick around. I’ve always enjoyed discussing military issues with you, and I think you have something to contribute. You’re a part of the community, and I hope you change your mind.

As much as I like GD and The Pit, this place is worth it to me for GQ alone. I’m continually amazed at how many really knowledgeable people post there. I’ve gotten more than my money’s worth from Colibri and folks like him.

Plus, Cafe Society is fun. I actually like meeting up with people there with whom you’ve had a heated debate only to find out you both like the same book, movie or TV show. It’s almost like real life!!

Well, FWIW to you Moto I’ll be sorry to see you go. :frowning: I toyed with the idea of leaving when we had to re-up our subscriptions this last time as I was out of the country (and lost my Charter Member status) and sort of apathetic at the time. I didn’t do so because I really still enjoy this board…and the thought of making guys like Hentor happy left me determined to stick it out for a bit longer.

Anyway, luck to you 'mano…

Mr Moto
Wow I was wondering where the heck you went to. I hadn’t seen you posting much lately and now I know why. I’m glad you made this posting since I think you are one of the better-known “Dopers”. I know we were usually on opposite sides of the political spectrum but you’d always state your positions rationally and courteously.
I’m going to stick around for another year I think. Heck as others have mentioned, you just might need to get an answer from GQ.
Wow, I hope GQ doesn’t get too opinionated. That would be too much. “Does anyone know about Euler’s method for solving quartic equations and why George “Dubya” Bush is such a dickhead?”

Good luck Mr Moto.

I disagree with your politics, but I think this board would be the lesser for your leaving.

If you do leave, know that at least one of us durn lefties will regret it.

Yup, you’ve proven your worth. You are in the majority. The dissenting view (that you seem so vehement in defending no matter the cause, so long as the overall opinion in a thread agrees with you), isn’t good enough when it doesn’t sync with your thoughts. To hell with with anyone that disagrees with you.

The SDMB is more than the Pit, and the Pit is more than politics. But maybe that isn’t important in the overall concept of the site. I certainly won’t fault you for it. It’s been slowly rolling into the station for a long time.

Mr Moto, I’d beg you to stay, but as you know it wasn’t stated as a priority in this morning’s talking points us mindless drones get everyday. Personally, I hate to see you go. One step closer to the place being a watered-down mini-DU. Being a Conservative is bad here. Even as I have posted beefs with Bush, I’m dismissed in other threads for sucking his dick. You can see the population we’re dealing with.

Hell, posts # 2 & 4 start it all off. It’s not about fighting ignorance. And, honestly, it can’t be. Get a few dozen people that hammer some keys with no accountability, and you’re not going to get any “fairness”. The boards are still vital and important in a way.

GQ should be a permanant fixture to anyone on the web. I’ve found it more useful than Google in many cases. Outside the Pit denizens, there are some pretty knowledgeable folks that come here.

But as the above mentioned posts prove, some are gleefuly happy to celebrate anyone leaving that challenges their beleifs. They love to fight ignorance so long as nobody disagrees with what they “know”.

Again. I don’t want you to go, but I do expect you to stand by your conviction in leaving. I’d rather you leave on principle than see another first-responder make a shitheaded post (proving your point) as #2 & #4 did. No, I’m not quoting. In fact, the numbers 2 and 4 are now somehow dirty.

Aw, stick around. I want to read your reaction when the Democrats retake Capitol Hill. You’re an amusing fellow. I’ll miss the way you give draft-dodging Republicans a pass while lambasting war-decorated Democrats for not genuflecting to their medals.

Sorry for the momentary tangent, but some edumacation is in order. If you are expressing something that you dislike about someone to the person, you are not being passive aggressive. Passive aggression refers to someone acting out against a person without confronting them about what the grievance is or expressing the concern to them.

For instance, if you were mad at your boss for giving a project to someone else, so you show up late to meetings, rather than discussing it directly with him, that’s passive aggressive. If a wife is upset with her husband for being late to dinner, so she oversalts the pot roast, that’s passive aggressive.

Telling someone that you’re sad to hear he’s leaving, but here’s what you didn’t like about his posting style, and saying it must be hard to be a conservative these days, that’s not passive aggressive.

Telling you you are a fucking tool is just aggressive aggressive.

I’m sorry to see you go, Moyo.

Still, I’m losing interest in the board myself, for all the reasons you mentioned. Everyone around here takes everything way too damn seriously these days. I’ll probably resubscribe, but I wouldn’t lose any sleep if the board shut down for some reason.

Well, OK, maybe a little sleep.

Two of us lefties. Be well, Mr. Moto: while I understand your decision, I think that there’s a great value, especially in this time of hardening opinions, to listening to and exposing one’s own opinions to intelligent folks on the opposite side of the aisle. If you decide to come back, you’ll be welcomed by at least some of us lefties :).

Daniel

Maybe I’d care if I knew who you are. See, there are members who are memorable because they post valuable knowledge. There are members who are memorable because they have to post in every thread whether they have anything of substance to add or not. There are members who are memorable because they post hilariously funny things. There are members who are memorable because they are obnoxious. You don’t fall into any of these groups.

I think you might have overestimated the numbers there.

Maybe not, but it’s huge enough to even write this thread at all.

You shoulda just left like a man.

He aha te mea nui o te Ao. He tangata, he tangata, he tangata-* What is the greatest thing of the world? People, people, people.*

…I quite highly suspect Mr Moto that you have many more friends here than you have enemies, and you are more welcome here than you may think. Starving Artist and I have two very different political points of view, and we have tussled a few times in the past, but that doesn’t stop us putting aside our differences when the time for debate is gone. It’s a shame that many people can’t look past somebody’s user name and debate the post, and not the poster. Just from the results of the last US election, it is clear that you represent the moderate voice of a huge percentage of the US population-and to loose that viewpoint (even though that viewpoint is wrong  ) does nothing to help in the fight against ignorance. Add me to the list of voices hoping that you stay, but if you need to, take some time away from the boards. If you do leave, I wish you all the best. Stand by your convictions, don’t take the detractors seriously, Kia Kaha-(stand strong) and live your life well.

Good luck on kicking the SDMB habit. Hopefully, during withdrawal you won’t see a baby crawling across the ceiling arguing about Bush.

Aw, cut the guy a break, people! **Mr. Moto ** is anything but one of my favorite posters, and I’ve found his arguments to generally be weak and highly partisan, but he’s not displaying excessive egotism here. He’s well-known enough that his disappearance would have caused comment, and he’s perfectly entitled (without accusations of egotism) to both say goodbye and state the reasons for his leaving.

Mr. Moto, I’m indifferent to your going or staying, but hope to heaven that you aren’t feeling driven away! That would be a tragedy. Whatever else I may disagree with, you’ve been a good poster who follows the rules of the board and contributes a valuable insight into folks who share your positions (and there must be many, given the election results of recent years).

Now who will constantly try and show us how all us lefties hate soldiers, hate the military, and so therefore hate America and all it stands for?

Mr. Moto, the few years you spent in the Navy may have taught you a few things, but it does not make you better than other people, or wiser, or (really, most especially) more patriotic. All you are is a person with a different set of experiences.

I only hope that someday you wake up and recognize the disastrous consequences of the US policies you have been so intrepid about defending here. Toodles.

I’ve never gotten why so many people around here seem to think the original and primary purpose of this board is to give them a place to express whatever political opinion comes into their heads.

To the OP I say: stay or go as you wish. Your (or my) departure means very little in the greater scheme of things, but instead of quitting in a huff, you might also consider seeing whether you might enjoy this place more if you treated it as something other than a forum for tedious political bunfights.

You mean say he was going out for cigarettes and not return?

Nicely put, although I am not sure what bunfights means. I think its kind of funny that Moto, one of the meanest most partisan fuckheads, is making an appeal to moderation his swan song. Its like MartinHyde leaving saying we are all just to mean for him.

I enjoy the discussion with many of the conservatives around here, people like Bricker and JohnMace, provide opportunity for meaningfull debate to some extent. But Moto and others of his ilk do nothing but spew the vilest sort of ignorance and intolerance. I for one will not miss his self righteous holier than thou postings.
