Somehow I just don’t buy this touchy-feely statement. I would have respected you more if you had owned your part of the “two sides talking past each other.”
Do I want you to go? No-I enjoy the spectacle and variety that SDMB has to offer. Do I ask that you stay? No-but I think you would get less shit if you admitted that maybe you weren’t openminded about some topics and perhaps a little too willing to deomonize those who did not share your views.

Well, I’d rather not see Mr. Moto go. He’s contributed good things to this board. I think first of the war heroes threads that various people tried to shit on… but that’s another story.
I think if everyone’s opinion were are constantly hardening as everyone has always claimed as been so, all debates would actually be taking place in the Pit and nowhere else. But that’s really not the case.
Anyway, I hope you’d consider coming back after a break. I find it kind of boring for liberals like myself to only debate with leftist whackos.
All you have to do is glance through one of the zombie threads, or some long forgotten thread somebody linked to, and see all the “Guests” or “Banned” posters in them. Some of the names jump out as posters you once noticed, some you never remember reading. I sometimes wonder what happened to them, but even if they had posted a “swan song”, I probably wouldn’t recall that. Just not that big of a deal, really.
This community is what WE make it. Every poster contributes to the tone of this board. I wouldn’t mind if discussions of United Statesian politics disappeared completely (they are extremely boring for those of us with no dog in the race), but I’m not leaving over it.
But I do agree that The Pit has gotten pretty stale lately. Have we just roasted everything there is to roast and there’s nothing new to be righteously indignant about?
There’s plenty to be ‘righteously indignant’ about in the world, but unless it pertains directly to the US political system/activities, it doesn’t seem to mention a blip on the SDMB radar unfortunately.

Politics aside, there’s probably just a burnout factor here. 5,000+ posts is a lot. I wonder myself if the SDMB will still look as fresh and virginal to me when I get to that point. And FWIW, I think it’s an entirely appropriate for Moto to make a parting statement. It’s always a little disconcerting when well-known posters just vanish into the ether.
Also FWIW, though Moto’s views are about diametrically opposite mine, and no one could accuse him of being non-partisan, I’ve never found him to be the flaming jerk that some people are, on both sides of the divide. (How’s that for faint praise from the liberal side of the house?)

I’ve a friend here who told me privately they weren’t going to resubscribe. No swan song. just some day in the near future, their status will revert to “Guest”. Folks who care will be able to figure it out.
This is true and a sad statemtent on us. I don’t know the answer to the problem, either–when the USA can get more worked up over a third rate performer’s “wardrobe malfunction” than ____________(fill in foreign crisis/political situation/revoution here).

I must be one of the few people around here who doesn’t ever notice a permanent shift in board temperament. Crazies come, crazies go, things get heated, things get boring, people disappear, people come back, charter members turn to guests, guests turn to members. The subject matter may change, but the temperament hasn’t. Yet these complaints come up every single year.
Eh, whatever. Maybe I’m just not all that in-tune to the tiny nuances that others seem to be catching.

Look, I’m just not sure how anything I’ve said is so heinous. My opinion about Mr. Moto is complicated by my initial fairly high regard for him and my disdain for his posting style over roughly the past year. I think he is capable of making valuable contributions. Personally, I know that his observation of my tendency to presume the basest motivations behind others’ posts is something I took to heart, and which continues to occur to me as I compose posts. I am quite sure I haven’t completely stopped myself from this practice, but I know that I have revised a good number of posts with his comment in mind.
Again, if sniping at me is important, either open a new thread on that topic, or probe yourself anally. We can either discuss how terribly unintelligent I am, or you can pleasure yourself and simultaneously check for polyps. Here’s to your good health!
