Brief tangent: Remember when Cronkite died? We had a bunch of reporters sitting around the table saying things like, “Boy those were the days when reporters actually fact-checked and were unbiased. You know, were actually good at their jobs.” And then we all thought to ourselves, “It’s a pity you’re in a position where there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it!”

This needs to be said more.

I was back in the States during the whole Michael Jackson’s death thing, and could not find a single so-called news channel showing anything like serious news, apart from a tiny ticker across the bottom of one of the CNN channels. Everything else was 99% “This just in - Michael Jackson is still dead” and 1% “Here is a clip of a hamster nibbling peanut in a cute fashion we found on YouTube”. FoxNews made me want to punch the television in, CNN gave me epilepsy (seriously, watch the ad breaks on CNN with the sound off sometime - it’s ), and I frankly couldn’t see the point of MSNBC at all - I think it’s just there so that the Left can feel happy that it has a FoxNews of its own to play with.

Give me the BBC any day - even when they’re shallow and trivial they’re miles ahead of the US cable news networks. For now…

I’ve listened to her show on Air America, but never watched her.

Here’s the specific incident I was thinking of, which on further thought probably doesn’t quite fit what we’re talking about here. Maddow crowed about John McCain’s supposedly saying “I don’t have the guts to bring up William Ayers [in the debate].” **She went on about how McCain was admitting he didn’t have the guts to bring the subject up… but in fact, McCain never said that. **McCain actually said that OBAMA had said, “McCain doesn’t have the guts…”

In other words, Maddow **intentionally misquoted McCain’s words **and then used the misquote to ridicule McCain.

I’ll allow that, while this isn’t exactly honorable, it’s not in the same league as the other examples.

You make it sound as if she was squawking about the size of McCain’s balls–that McCain never said he didn’t have the guts, Obama did. But IIRC, the focus wasn’t on the pendulocity of the McTesticles, it was about McCain’s repeated use of the “I’m-not-bringing-this-up” method of bringing things up. Again, this is only an IIRC, and we could be thinking of two different issues–but if not, then your really talking about virtual rage.
