I'm SO sick of hearing "Trump voters are not bad people...we need to empathize with them". FUCK THAT

Hastur’s balls & Nyarlathotep’s taint , what an utter load of crock. City life is no more artificial than farm life, and has been around almost as long in human history. Fuck agrophiles right in their Cycle of the Seasons. “Oh, they’re so independent and self-sufficient” Yeah, that’s why all the John Deere factories are in the boondocks  Farmers know as much about how their combine harvester is made as his apocryphal crying city girl does about where her steak comes from

Rural bumpkins vote for Trump because there’s been a process of evolution such that the smartest people are in cities, is what has happened*.
*Not really, but that makes more sense than “Rural people are more in touch with reality, therefore…Trump”

What struck me more was the stunning backwardness of the statement “A classic example is so-called ‘cultural Marxism’. I’ve met very few rural dwellers who would give even a moment’s thought to such nonsense, let alone devote time and attention to analyzing it.” The only set of people who do tend to devote a lot of time to analyze so-called ‘cultural Marxism’ are righties. I, for one, cannot do so because I don’t know what it is, and when righties have tried to explain it their explanation was so incoherent that it didn’t seem worth it to analyze.

The irony is that living outside of major urban centers requires far more per capita investment by governments on infrastructure to maintain roads, electricity, etc. If the red county types were actually chopping down trees by hand and building their own cabins, I’d be more impressed with their perspective.

I like RationalWiki’s take on it:

Wikipedia concurs.

(E.T.A - hoping - in vain? - this is the last time this issue is addressed?)

Dude - that was, like, over 50 posts ago, with shitloads of replies since.

You did that in another thread! Feeble-as-fuck suckerpunch, then leg-tailing* it the fuck outa here. Do you always weasel around like that?

(or, wait…I guess you probably won’t be around to answer this putatively desperately frantic liberal’s query:p)

So you’re suggesting there’s a “we”, somewhere, here?

New word invention - “leg-tailing” - heretofore replacing “hightailing”.
Your most welcome.

To my delight, I’ve found out that some of the more important North American John Deere factories (i.e. the ones that make some of the engines) aren’t even in the US.

They’re in Mexico

“They’re sending their greenest. And some, I assume, are good tractors”

Suuure “they” did.

I’ve been reading this thread with interest…but the quote from the Bayou Renaissance Man blog caught my attention. I’ve seen that point of view before and the problem I have with it is that the rural life he described is just as artificial as the urban one. There is nothing particularly “natural” about a farmer, or a seed merchant, or heaven forbid, a farm machinery supplier. Urbanites are no more “divorced from reality” than suburbanites or rural people. It’s all very real. Everyone’s actions have “real” consequences. The idea that living in a city divorces you from reality is just stupid all the way down. All people live in a modified environment from hunter-gatherer groups to trust fund babies; and trying to pretend that rural entities have a better grasp of “realities” is absurd. And that anecdote of some young college educated woman not realizing meat comes from animals…oh please. That’s on the level of children thinking all cats are girls and all dogs are boys. Most adults have more than a passing notion of where food comes from. Could they produce it? Maybe not, but they do have more than a vague idea of its source.

And he also seems to double down on the idea that the only “real” America and Americans are those bitterly angry ones. Entire swaths of the country don’t think that Clinton or Obama have “contempt” for them and in fact understand them very well. Now I do believe that there is contempt being shown to a segment of the country; hell, I admit I am contemptuous of those people who are like leftfield6’s coworker, who wants to behave in horrible ways but not be called on it, the hypocrites that scream about being called “racist” and “misogynist”, “homophobic” when they run around doing doing racist and misogynistic things. I will stop being contemptuous when they stop doing contemptible things. I think there is a significant difference in the Tea Party and the Trumpeters and the people who voted for Ross Perot (which I confess I did back in '92 - but when he went off the rails, I got off the train). The Tea Party and the Trumpeters seem to be all about their hatred of a variety of things and don’t seem to support anything; all I remember about Ross Perot’s campaign was economic. We weren’t blaming “evil others” for our economic problems; I actually preferred Bush Sr. on foreign policy and thought he was a nice man. I thought Clinton would have a better grasp of some domestic issues but I did think that since Perot was in all actuality a successful businessman with a number of profitable companies who actually cared about his employees (up to and including arranging for their rescue), he would do best for the country as a whole economically. And I thought of myself as extremely partisan because Watergate was my formative political watershed.

I don’t see that now. I see a bunch of people with hate in the heart of hearts who are looking forward to seeing bad things happen to anyone who is not them.

(Ninja’d by Mr. Dibble.)

Without mentioning the Great Satan Hillary, could you explain why you believe, after his long history of making deals that benefit himself only and screwing over anybody and everybody after he has extracted all he can from them, that he has suddenly had a change of heart and wants to help the rest of the country? Why do you believe what comes out of his mouth?

Hey, coprophagists have the right to vote too, ya know!

<humblebrag>
Back in the day I actually took several seminars on Critical Theory and the Frankfurt school so whenever I see ‘Cultural Marxism’ in print I’m always like ‘WTF does Horkheimer and Adorno have to do with this pissing match?’
</humblebrag>

They are angry that a black man became President. And now…a woman?!?!?!?

I get real sick of fucktards saying that Obama has shredded the constitution but cannot name one single act that they feel is unconstitutional. I am sick of hearing how they ain’t free no more but cannot tell me one single freedom they enjoyed under Bush that they do not enjoy now.

No “liberal” refers to the Democratic Party as the “Democrat party.” It’s a stupid attempt to insult that usually reveals more about the person attempting it. Thus, your post is suspect from the start.

But, you do have a point. Many members of the Democratic Party are too centrist in the opinion of those to the left of center in the party. It has always been thus. I don’t know what you mean by “weed out,” however. I’d prefer a healthy dialog.

The radicals hack out the path and clear the site. Progressives build the cabins and the fireplaces. Liberals come along after the hot showers are installed.

No, only Trump supporters. Who top out at 40% of all Americans. So, at most, 20% of Americans fit in the basket.

Whoa. I think your math skills are comparable with mine own. Most folks still don’t vote, so 40% of voters is considerably less than 40% of the people. Say, half? So, maybe 20% for a rough estimate of “the people” are Trumpiviks. So, maybe half of those are “deplorable”, and the rest, pitiable. A few left over who are “dethpicable”!

Not Trump’s policies. Their support could be simply an attempt to ensure an absence of Hilary’s policies (i.e., the appointment of SCOTUS justices by a President who does not upport the reversal of Roe v. Wade). We Dopers aren’t the only ones who can recognize the ineffectiveness of “protest” voting, you know.

My calculations (I screwed this one up before)

Let’s say 60% turnout for presidential elections
75% of Americans are older than 18
Trump is currently polling at about 40%
Not all of Trumps votes come from “Trump supporters”. Let’s say 40% of his votes come from die-hard Republicans, who will support any candidate with an R, (60% “Trump supporters”)
Hillary says HALF of these Trump supporters are in the deplorable basket

So that gives us 60% * 75% * 40% * 60% * 50% = only 5.4% of Americans in the “deplorable” basket.

I think this is a reasonable number of people who are hateful, stupid and/or bigoted.

Think of all the methods used to exploit the apparently irrational decision making of people. Knowing that these things work, why not utilize the same mechanisms instead of counterproductive ones?

Why is that? Do all liberals get an official what to call The Party memo? And how exactly is Democrat an insult?
