I dunno, the con artist usually does okay.
I'm SO sick of hearing "Trump voters are not bad people...we need to empathize with them". FUCK THAT
Until he starts believing his own crap.
Agreed. But consider this: You have someone telling you they are going to do what is in your worst interest, verses a con artist lying to you, promising sunshine and lollypops, free beer!
Who you gonna go with?
If you’re asking me, I am not going with the free beer. But then, I was also never tempted to sign up for Trump “University” or anything like it. I assume that’s true for most people here.
What I can’t get over is the people interviewed at Trump rallies who say, nearly verbatim (and I’ve heard this multiple times over the months) “I know he can’t actually do ________, but he’s telling us exactly what we want to hear!”
That’s a *good *thing? I grew up understanding the phrase “telling you what you want to hear” as a nicer version of “blowing smoke up your ass”. Basically, bullshit–something coming from a snake in the grass. Since when is it a reason to consciously prefer a candidate?
Doesn’t he teach Taekwondo? He’s probably been kicked in the head quite a bit.
I don’t actually have anyone telling me that. Immigration leading to citizenship, raising the minimum wage and making education more affordable would all be good for the economy. Governments can do some things right, and completely unregulated markets often don’t remain free for long. I’m not afraid of people who don’t look like me or LGBTQ-whatever people, or those who believe in different religions, so long as they don’t require me to believe also. What’s not in my best interest?
Who will the Left have to hate, and feel morally superior to, if those horrible Right Wingers all went away?
Best con artist is usually the one the media dotes on…
What about the one that tells you what you want to hear, although his past gives you no reason whatsoever to believe that he is interested in anyone but himself? The one that makes incredible claims about what he is going to do…but never actually explains how he is going to do it?
I asked my liberal friends(they tolerate me), what was going to happen after Hillary is elected.
They indicated a desire to weed out certain"undesirable"elements within the Democrat party.
Apparently, some Democrats are too far to the Right?
The BEST con artist, is the one the media dotes on.
That’s literally impossible. It’s provable that there are no undesirable elements within the Democrat party.
Mere liberals like me. ![]()
You may not realize it, but this is a very good point. The Left doesn’t tend to dislike liberals in general, but liberals like SlackerInc–egomaniacs who lash out with uninformed contempt at political rivals, who brag about tehir own genius because it’s otherwise not on display, who construct shoddy arguments and then insult people who don’t understand what point they intended to convey–will never be liked, despite their political leanings.
Nitpick- she’ll be president-elect on November 9, not president. To be really anal, she’ll be the presumptive president-elect pending the vote of the electors and the counting of ballots in the Senate.
I don’t see a need to empathize with Trump voters and not all of them are bad people. I categorize Trumpians as follows:
1- Social Warriors. Most typically anti-abortion, they base their vote on one issue and will vote for Trump with the hope of getting Roe eventually overturned. I disagree with their beliefs and goals, but at least they’re being consistent. They will vote for a lying sociopathic sexual predator in hopes of eliminating what they perceive as a greater social evil.
2- Woefully Misinformed. These are the people that listen to Hate Radio, watch Fox, and believe every right wing Facebook meme. They live in an alternate reality and within that reality, they are the forces of good fighting against the satanic horde.
3- Assholes. These are people who hate Muslims, Mexicans, blacks, women, whatever. They are the truly unredeemable deplorables and probably the vast majority of those that you see at his rallies.
I believe the social warriors are in the minority of the Trump supporters, and there is a great overlap between groups 2 and 3. I often say that supporting Trump does not make you an asshole, but being an asshole makes you support Trump.
Those who are in group 1 can’t be reasoned with, they have their principles and will stand by them. Those in group 2 can’t be reasoned with, they will not leave their information bubble. Nor can those in group 3 be reasoned with. My bottom line is that any attempt to reason with or empathize with Trumpians is a waste of time.
Yeah, okay LHOD. Hope that was cathartic for you to get out of your system.
Anyhoo. The left wingers I’m talking about do dislike “mere liberals” in general, whom they see as hopelessly compromised by the military-industrial complex and too focused on social issues to really seek fundamental structural changes in the economy.
Those left wingers are exactly like you, inasmuch as they look at folks with moderately similar views and, instead of looking for ways to build an alliance, look for ways to show how they’re ideologically superior and the other folks are contemptible.
I have much more patience with folks, radicals or moderates, who look to build alliances.
At least, that’s how I feel outside of the Pit :).
Then you’re a nasty, stupid, ignorant, arrogant idiot.
Try reading this piece from someone who thinks Clinton will win.
In another entry, he excerpts David Gelertner of the WSJ:
As I’ve said in other threads, it could be anyone but it happens to be Trump who is the focal point for their anger.
Now, I don’t believe that there are sufficient angry people to elect Trump - indeed I predict a landslide for Clinton - but the establishment should take this as a warning that they are dangerously out of touch. We saw it with Perot in 92, the Tea Party in the past decade, and now Trump.
Wow, that sounds really scary. Who are you, exactly?
Excellent analysis.
