Um, yeah, as long as no one mentions frizzy hair again.
Also, you won’t know me by my Darth Vader boot anymore, because I am free of it at last.
Wouldn’t it be funny if, this time, we were all complaining about how cold it is at Durgin Park?

But I’m scared to drive into Boston. Those city drivers are nuts!
Is there somewhere to park just outside the city and cab in?
Is your location accurate? From NH/VT, find your way to Rte. 128 (the ring road around Boston, it’s also I-95 for some of its length) and take Rte. 2 inbound. There’s a big parking garage at Alewife (should be plenty of spaces available by the evening) and take the Red Line. From Park Street, you can change to the Green Line or just walk to Durgin Park.
So, we’ll see you there, then?
First off, I’m with you: Driving in Boston is terrifying! I’ve driven in NYC, DC, Norfolk, LA, SF, and Orlando. The only place I’m afraid to drive is Boston. It’s the one-way streets, I think.
But, why cab it? Durgin-Park is convenient to the T, and there are a number of commuter parking garages for outlying T stations. One of the pleasures of Boston, to my mind, was always walking through it.
Though, as a large male, I have to confess I’ve never had to worry about being hassled by random strangers. So, while I don’t remember the T as being unsafe, I guess that could be a concern for you. Of course, ISTR that a number of cabs would stick by those larger commuter parking lots, too - so you could still use that for cabbing, too.
Depending on how you’re coming into the Boston area, if it’s from the west, I’ve always had good luck going just to Alewife Station, and taking the Red Line in from there. That link, while focused on Alewife Station is on the MBTA’s website, and they claim to offer trip planning tools there, so you should be able to find other commuter garages if that idea appeals to you.
Damn. Robot Arm beat me to it.
Oo, it’s in that Faneuil (how do you pronounce that, anyway?) Hall shopping area? I’ve been there once on a bus trip.
I’m already feeling intimidated by you smart city slickers
Fan-you-ell.
I’d be thrilled to meet you, too.
I think I did pretty well this year. Instead of feeling sorry for myself that people wouldn’t remember, I decided to plan to hang out with the handful of people I really like, and set up a lunch out and a dinner in at my surrogate family’s house. Yes, I had to take the initiative, but I ended up having a low-key time with my favorite folks and it was very nice. I also don’t like surprises too much so having control made it much less oogy for me.
I’m bGeekumping this because I wonder if other Bostonians, like** bbs2k** and **JustAnotherGeek **and the MilliCal family (might as well give her top billing, eh?) and anyone else have been made aware of this…
uh
non-event.
Also, if there’s anyone named Eric in the Boston area, we could sure use the representation.
Thanks, lorene.
bbs2k is certainly invited, that was a given. I’m just not sure if it conflicts with his work schedule.
Well, Happy Birthday, tdn!
If I were still consulting in the good ole USA, I would bring my Famous Shrimp Creole to one of those restaurants (the one that would let me, but I ain’t naming names here)
The proprietor would take care of the salad and drinks.
Not trying to be something I’m not, but I have read an awful lot of your posts and I do feel that you would…uh…(Seinfeld: The Sponge episode)…be worthy of this.
Plus, I bet you are a piss-cutter when you’re frunk!
Do you know how to get to Haverhill? There’s a train station downtown, and I think it’s $11 for a round trip ticket, plus 2-3 for parking. Given gas is close to $3 a gallon, it can’t be more expensive than driving to near and taking a cab. The train drops you off at North Station in Boston, which is near the subway. You can get the train from Dover too, but it’s a lot more.
Too bad this is a Thurday night. I’d be tempted if it were the weekend. Next year maybe.
Just a heads up - Nov 1. is scheduled to be game 7 of the World Series, which will be at Fenway if the Sox are in it. Personally I think the Sox can clobber the Rockies in 5, but considering what travel into & out of Boston will be like if that game occurs, you may want to have a backup plan.
Thanks, LiveOnAPlane.
Ooh, I did not know this. Thanks for the heads up.
Maybe it won’t be an issue, as there may be no game 7. If there is, I may not even want to leave my apartment. Things will be crazy out there.
I’m sorry I’m not in a position to jet up to Boston to wish you happy birthday in person. I love Boston, one of my favorite cities. My sister still owns a condo in Cambridge and I keep threatening to move there.
My birthday is also in November a mere 16 days after yours. I knew there was a reason I liked you.
Have a blast at birthdopefest and here’s hoping that the ensuing hangover isn’t all that painful (and that you get laid)
We’re a week out, so I wanted to keep this going.
Durgin Park at 6:30? That should get everyone home by the start of game seven, which I doubt very much is going to happen anyway.
I’ve got a ship-this-product-or-die-trying deadline the next day, but I should be able to make it.
The time is fine with me. If I can be there at all, I can be there at 6:30.
If I can’t be there, happy birthday.
Were I anywhere near Boston I’d come. The fact that it’s also my birthday would be merely coincidental.
That’s cool! That would make you only the third person I’ve met that shares the date.
What year? (I’m on a lifelong search for the person who was born the same day in the same year in the same hour, and if I’m lucky, in the same hospital. I’m not terribly hopeful that it will ever happen.)
It sort of does.
But I’ll still try to make it
I hope you can.
I want to spend this birthday shooting beer out my nose. You can help make that happen.
