I’d love to see how well you’d do in her shoes. My thinking is that you’d bluster and bluff until they pulled out the Swiss Army Knife and threatened to perform a do-it-yourself tracheotomy on you. Or maybe you’d just be so completely out-of-your-mind terrified that you’d pee your pants and offer allegiance to Osama if they so much as spoke harshly in Arabic to you.
Spoken like a true patriot, the sort who has already condemned John Mccain and others for their cowardly and treasonous activities while vactioning in Hanoi.
Bullshit. An American who would say “death to America” is a traitor. That’s a hanging offense.
That Don Imus … what an asshole !!!
Oh yeah I’m sure she meant all the things she said while she was in captivity.
Can’t we have some unofficial policy whereby anything anybody says while being held captive is to be regarded as 100% unadulterated bullshit?
This reminds me of a speech Charles Bronson makes in “Master of The World”. He is being told off by some phony gentleman that he should have shown his true intentions to Vincent Price (who is attempting to conquer the world).
“What should I have done? Proclaim in ringing gentlemanly tones that I would defy him until my dying breath? Well, believe me that dying breath would have been shortly forthcoming. It was risk enough not joining forces with him. This is the world we’re living in … not some drawing room.”
Too bad Mr Bronson is no longer with us. He should give a speech like that to Don Imus. (Did I mention Don Imus is an asshole?)
Boy, you’re a real piece of shit, and you’d probably be better off hung.
Jesus Christ, Updike. Did you slip with your self-righteous prick supplements or something?
Now, now. Ms. Carroll wore a headscarf. What further proof do we need that she is contemptible?
The fact that Updike simply lacks facts, logic, compassion, or brains is no reason to presume that he is also short on meds.
I hope you one day have the opportunity to demonstrate how brave you would be under a similar set of circumstances.
Fucking piece of shit.
I think we’ve got conclusive proof that he is. I mean, Updike was never the sharpest knife in a drawer, but this is astonishingly bad.
Updike, it’s really not worth explaining - that you said what you said is proof that you’re too stupid to understand it and too contemptible to waste the time - but here goes in short: you’re calling her a coward from the comfort of your desk chair. You’re probably going to claim you wouldn’t say what she said, so in addition to being a world-class prick for your cricitism, you’re convincing everybody you’re a hypocrite. If you were there, I’m sure you’d end up saying whatever they told you to say. We’ve seen terrorist kidnappers murder more than enough people in the last few years to know that they could easily follow through on their threats against her. And she’s spent years over there, so I’m sure she’s more acutely aware of that situation than anybody on this board. Or maybe you’re brave enough that you wouldn’t have said anything if you were in her shoes. If so, good for you. But honesly- criticizing someone’s conduct while held hostage? What kind of a douchebag does that? Imus is doing it for money, to get a rise out of people… what the hell is your excuse?
Why are you guys responding to Updike? Board policy prohibits me from pointing out the obvious, but do any of you think he really believes anything he’s saying? Give him what he truly deserves - nothing - and he’ll go find some other place to play.
I haven’t responded to Updike’s postings because I thought they were a woosh.
He stated:
To me, that seemed so outrageously facetious it didn’t even need the rolleyes.
Also, short replies are generally indicative of humorous postings.
Updike
You seriously think Jill Carroll is a coward?
Okay, Updike, it is now pst midnight. It is April 2nd. So you were joking, right?
Right?
And even if you were’nt joking, take this opportunity to say that you were. Consider it a gift to you, and all of us.
WTF? My computer says 12:14.
The funny thing is that Imus is pussy whipped big time by his wife Dierdre.
Cheers to updike for pulling off one of the better April Fools Day threads!
Right?
small nitpick…reading the interview posted by the OP clearly shows Bernard Mcguirk as the primary (and apparently sole) source of the offending comments. Imus appears to chastise him a bit (albeit moderately).
For the record, I feel this interview is juvenile and not really worth giving the time of day to. These “adult men” are clearly cretins.
Just a quick note. She was wearing the headscarf long before she was abducted. IIRC, she did it out of respect for the muslim tradition. This wasn’t something she just put on because she was kidnapped.
As for cowardice, she was reporting in a country that - and this may be a bit of an understatement - is not the safest place to spend spring break, though I understand the fireworks are to die for. Seems pretty hardcore to me. Maybe I’m just easily impressed.
Nice to know that most of the women in the Muslim world are wearing “terrorist headgear.”
I’m not familiar with Imus’ show, but there are lots of morning radio shows with DJs who are essentially paid to be titanic assholes. Why people listen to them, I don’t know.
Are you out of your mind? There is nothing cowardly or dishonorable about making statements under duress. The number one priority in captivity is survival, and if she felt that she absolutely had to make that statement or die that was the honorable thing to do.
For someone that likely never had training in that regard she did hella good just to get home.
tomndebb Any chance you might try actually moderating in this thread, rather that joining in the pile-on?
Big Bad Voodoo Lou said I’d be better off dead, and Little Nemo called me a troll.
Do you have any comments on that?
