In A Mirror, Darkly - Part II [Star Trek Enterprise SPOILERS]

Mayweather didn’t get to speak much in this ep either. But boy o boy did he get his licks in! From pummelling that blue lizard guy for interrogation (while wearing a red wife beater no less!), to his kiss with Empress Hoshi while watching Quantum die, he played his nonspeaking role well.

Except for the still in limbo 11th movie, which might yet get made, neither Berman nor Bragga are likely to be involved in Trek again. For Berman this is huge, as about a third of his life and near half of his adult career has been wrapped up in one way or another with Trek. He has said that Paramount as a network is moving away from the very thing that gave it berth and is focusing on becoming a different sort of network. He sounds downright bitter about it, pointing to the new exec change from a couple of years back and to short sighted pandering from as far back as TNG causing the problems with the Trek franchise (includling the movies). Coto has said there are lots of good Trek ideas out there, movie or series, but he doubts that anyone involved now will be the next Trekkers. He looks for something from totally outside to make the next generation.

Was that Majel’s voice as the Defiant’s computer?

Yes.

I’m seeking confirmation, as I’m 99.99% sure it was. Was it listed in the credits? (I meant to look!)

Yes.

Sweet.

Took them long enough, but now Majel has been involved (in one way or another) with every incarnation of canonical Trek. (Includes narrations, computer voice, cartoon voice, and actual on screen characters.)

“What do we do now?”

“We die.”

The CGI on that Gorn was awful.

Empress Hoshi is cool!

As 'plant pointed out long ago, Archer still screams like a girl, even in the MU.

It’s about time Hoshi planted one on Travis.

The girlfight could have rocked a bit more.

Bearded Soval was a nice change.

I didn’t think this one was quite as much fun as part one, but the ending was excellent.

Utter disappointment. I thought Vulcan’s were stronger than humans? I wanted superior strength & nerve pinch vs. Hoshi-fu.

And of course they should have torn each other’s clothes off during the fight.

Yeah, those low-riding pants should have dropped in seconds.

This was about twenty minutes of good material stretched and padded out to make a full episode. A few good moments, but lots of downtime.

Also, this is another good episode to demonstrate budget management. That whole opening escape sequence (clamps are on! raise shields! wiggle the ship back and forth!) was done entirely with dialogue and by shaking the camera until the Defiant was out of the docking area. During this bit, I was thinking: “Either they’ve gone totally cheap for this episode, or they’re saving their money for something cool later.” When they showed the Gorn in silhouette, I thought, “Ah, there’s gonna be a big fight later with a CGI creature. Should be fun.”

And then they actually, y’know, did it. Yeah.

Anyway, they needed about fifteen more minutes of actual story in this one, and they’d have had a winner like last week. Sort of a letdown, but not a total crash and burn.

To the finale! Limp on, my little franchise, limp on…

Pretty good followup, though it did drag a tad. Nice to see the Gorn again. Nice forshadowing of humanity going to pay. Nice to see Hoshi be awesome. Really nice.
Fairwell, friends.

But you werethe chosen one! Glad to hear from you, old friend. Peace, and long life.

Everyone remember where we parked…!

Only two more Fridays left. Three more episodes. Then, nothing. This is the end. For the first time in 18 years there will be no new Star Trek airing this Fall. Feels weird, doesn’t it?

Star Trek: Mirror Universe would be a great series.

Lots of Hoshi panda, and it was nice seeing the old uniforms, but beyond that it was an “eh?”. Phlox rocks everywhere. Nice abs all around.

Not sure I’ll miss the show when it’s gone.

If I may hijack briefly, what’s the story on that? I haven’t been following the news. Is this the end of the franchise, or we’ll just be taking a breather? What about the movies? Any plans for movies spotlighting any of the shows other than TNG?

[sarcasm]Ooh, wouldn’t it be cool to have a time travel movie so the TNG crew could team up with the Enterprise crew?[/sarcasm]

I am most assuredly not an insider. With this disclaimer, I offer an opinion:

With the “Powers-That-Be” making their statements with the air of finality, and at least one person admitting it outright, Paramount is willing to keep making money on the merchandising but someone in the Head Office doesn’t like the franchise. It’s obvious that the network has a completely different audience demographic in mind, and Trek isn’t in that world.

The Internet will be the only medium supporting Trek for the time being, so I see new development in the area of fan-created content. Trek will be sustained by the fans who keep it alive.

Besides, Star Trek is due to cross the line into a MMORPG. Future Trekkers will live their own adventures within the game, and Paramount still makes money hand over fist.

With the blah ratings, which may or may not have been the intent all along, Paramount is making a less risky move, if it’s cheaper to run a game and sell memorabilia than to produce a TV series in a competitive market.

I never felt comfortable with this “prequel,” mainly because it wasn’t really possible to tell the story and make it seem organic to the series as a whole. The whole problem with Trek is that so many of the stories told are cliche and mutually inconsistent, factors which are common in TV show production.

Paramount will make another movie, it will just take someone who has enough pull to get a Trek story filmed. Undoubtedly there will be false starts.

Even knowing you were joking, that still made me shudder.

I dug this ep, with the exeption of the cheesy CGI Gorn. Nasty Phlox was too cool, and the Hoshi/Vulcan hotness was much appreciated.

I don’t care what the rest of the world thinks. I love this series and will miss it terribly.

The Mad Hermit pretty much has it right. The ENT cast was supposed to be the next up for movies, and there is the skeleton of one still being looked at, but I doubt much will come of it. (My mood goes back and forth on this point.) Paramount/CBS/UPN execs have made it pretty clear they don’t like Trek any more. For the time being anyways. Let’s see what the next couple of exec changes bring us.

But it seems clear to me that the reason Paramount doesn’t like Trek anymore is because for over five years Trek has sucked eggs. And that drove the ratings away. The fact that the gibbering idiots over at Trek United are making asses of themselves and making it impossible for anyone at Paramount to on with their business isn’t helping anybody. As long as these problems are solved, no one at Paramount is going to stand in the way of a good Trek series if one ever comes along. (And if there is, he won’t keep his job long when he stands in the way of profit.) The reason they’re cancelling Enterprise isn’t to hurt Trek but to protect it, to the extent possible, from driving away those few fans left while they retool and hire someone other than Berman and Braga to run it.

There is some truth to that. ENT season II drove even hard core Trekkers away and gauranteed no new fans. Why do you think I’ve been so disappointed with the Bergama this whole time?

But, even without the Bergama and poor writing, the new execs simply don’t like Trek. They merely tolerated it. Look what Coto had to say in earlier interviews. ENT was given early Friday as a time slot. Except for some notable exceptions like Mulder and Scully, few shows have done well with that slot. The budget was severely cut back. Promo was to be virtually nonexistant. All this was seen in the interim between Seasons III and IV.

I feel that if these conditions hadn’t been put in place, severely handicapping any possible Coto rebuild of the series, then we would have, not just a Trek show coming back, but a good series, gaining new fans.

YMMV
