"In Plain Sight" - Fun Show!

I’m not sure if this has been done as a thread before. I know it was mentioned a little while ago in a a thread called “Crime Busting Cuties”, but I’m not sure if it’s had its own thread. If it has, I apologize.

But whatever the case, I really like this show. So I had to start a thread regardless.

I know the show is silly and improbable and stuff (like, okay, if Mary’s dad was on the FBI Most Wanted List for like 30 years no way would she have cleared a BG check, I guess.) But you guys, the show is fun!

It’s just the right mix of funny and tense and sad. The characters are well-written and (I think) pretty well-developed. Very sympathetic. Even Mary’s annoying sister, Brandi, is right on target for drama-heavy siblings who Just Make Your Life Unnecessarily Complicated and Embarrass You. And Mary’s mom is one sweet, fragile, flawed lady. The episode where she auditioned for “Sweet Charity” because she always wanted to be on the stage was really touching. And oh, man, when Mary gets abducted (same episode). I don’t care if it’s just a TV show, that episode gave me some serious sweaty palms. Just the worst-case scenario.

The plots and subplots are really cool and well woven one into the other. I can’t wait to see how the romantic relationship between Marshall and Mary develops (because you know it just HAS to!!).

I am totally psyched for the season finale this Sunday. Definitely a good reason to go home to my folks’ house so I can enjoy the benefits of cable (I don’t have the cable at my place as I am too cheap).

Does anybody else like this show?

I like the show, for all the reasons you mentioned. The only thing that annoys me is the relationship with Mary, Brandi, and Mary’s boyfriend (whose name escapes me at the moment). It keeps reminding me of those stupid “romantic comedies” where people jump to conclusions because of something they see or hear, or are told about something that someone else saw or heard, instead of actually talking to the other person.

I’m not sure, though, if I want to see a romantic relationship between Mary and Marshall. For one thing, it is too obvious a thing to have happen. I’ve seen too many shows go down the tubes because two of the main characters become a couple. And in the case of two Federal marshals, it would seriously affect their working relationship. I do like the byplay between them. And Marshall’s deadpan delivery of his lines plays perfectly with Mary’s almost hyperactive attitude.

Yeah, the thing with Mary seeing Brandi with her head in Rafael’s lap and thinking the worst… kind of corny, but that’s actually the kind of stuff that happens in real life… the banality of reality, if you like! The thing is, I think Mary and Brandi are actually going to have out at some point, just like real sisters would over a misunderstanding like that. And over all of the other completely irresponsible stuff Brandi does.
And I also see your point about a romantic relationship between coworkers. I guess I’m just a sloppy ole romantic at heart. It would be weird for law enforcement partners to get romantically involved for sure. But it isn’t actually unheard of for two people in the same branch of law enforcement to fall in love and stuff. They already have so much in common, right? And yes, Marshall is a really good foil for Mary. I love watching them together.

Have you seen the ads for Sunday’s episode? It looks like Brandi may be in big trouble, and one of the clips has Mary saying something like “I can’t help you this time.” I’m wondering if they’re going to end the season with a “to be continued” (which I generally hate, particularly when it looks like one or more major characters may be leaving).

This is definitely one of the shows I’m going to be buying on DVD when it comes out. Particularly if it has commentaries and out-takes, which I suspect would be hilarious.

Yeah, I did see the ads for this week’s episode! (I was home cat-sitting for my parents and glued to the TV).

Looks like Brandi’s suitcase full of dope is finally gonna land her in Big Trouble.

Jeez, can you just imagine how awful it would be, to be in Mary’s position and have a drug-dealing sister? That gives me sweaty palms, too.

And I betcha that episode is going to be a “To Be Continued”. That’s okay; I’ll definitely hang on until the fall!

One thing I like: The lead female character is attractive but not glamorously so. That’s a refreshing and welcome change that lends some credibility to the show.

Yeah, I think Mary is cute without being model-gorgeous, and that does make the show seem more real. She’s sturdy and fit but not willowy. You could totally see her passing her Physical Task Test with flying colors. Definitely realistic.
