In which I say a nice thing about a Republican

(Putting this in the pit even with no pitting because it’s not a great debate, and political threads always end up here).

So on my way home from work this evening I turned on NPR and heard the very beginning of the California Senatorial debate. The first question was to the Republican, Carly Fiorina.

Now, the first question of political debates is ALWAYS stupid. Always. First of all, the candidate spends 30 seconds of their 2 minutes or so thanking the moderators and so forth. And then they take whatever question was asked and warp it into a standard boilerplate pre-prepared set of comments, usually about lowering taxes.
So I was very impressed when Fiorina answered a question about regulations with… an answer about regulations. And in fact, one that was reasonable and thoughtful and made points I agreed with (even if I don’t necessarily agree with her overall policies).

I also listened to half of (democrat) Barbara Boxer’s first answer, and it wasn’t terrible, but Fiorina was clearly winning after 1.5 questions.
Granted, there is exactly zero chance that I will vote for Fiorina (which is another drawback of our two party system… the fact that judging individual candidates often ends up subordinate to votes based on party power balance), but she seems like an intelligent and thoughtful and knowledgeable candidate.

And here I thought you were going to speak of the departed.

Wow. I might vote her if she does things like that. I mean, I’m not in Cali., but that sort of thing I find endearing.

Tennessee’s current Republican candidate for governor, Bill Haslam, is kind of cute in an aging frat boy sort of way. http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2007/sep/26/haslamsails-tosecondterm/

('S all I got)

I suggest you write to Fiorina to thank her for answering the question she was asked. Such behavior is so rare it should be heartily encouraged.

Here’s another one: John Boehner has never asked for earmarks.

I have very little positive to say about Boehner, but all credit to him for that. (Too bad he couldn’t do anything about his friends in Congress.)

Don’t worry OP. It’s in the rules – everyone gets to say ONE good thing about ONE Republican.

I do? Let’s see…OK, got it.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is as good a Governor as he is an actor.

Saxby Chambliss fired the aide who said something really awful to a gay guy, and had the class to call the guy personally and apologize.

OK, that’s it, I did it, where’s my cookie?

Haley Barbour truly and steadfastly stands for the traditional values of Mississippi and the Old South and apparently makes money the old-fashioned way.

There, I said it.

This one’s kinda fuzzy to me. Is it a compliment?

See? See? This is why we can’t have nice things. Here we have a genuine attempt by members of largely left-identifying board praising their political opponents and some folk have to come along and piss all over it.

I may sulk now.

Small steps, man. Small steps.

Wow, you really know how to insult a guy.

You mean slave trading? :stuck_out_tongue:

We’ve got some pretty good local candidates who have great ideas for relevant issues for county and state level stuff that run as Republicans. But it’s hard to vote for them, because they also have to loudly announce that they’re anti-choice, anti-gay, and anti-evolution to get the nomination.

Eisenhower was a decent president. Does it have to be a living republican?

And Lincoln was one of the two greatest. Teddy Roosevelt did some pretty good stuff too.

And Nixon is dead.

Man, this is tough. Gimme a minute.

It’s the success and profitability of “making money” in modern-day “horse-trading” that I’m most “impressed” with.
