Indiana Jones and the Dial Of Destiny

Dial of Density … .

I’d like to see Indy go to a cinema to see Dr. No and mention that the lead actor looks a little like his father.

Just walking past a movie showing a James Bond movie would be a fun nod.

They kind of already made that joke in the Last Crusade when he walks by the wall painting of the Ark of the Covenant.

Yikes. Early reviews out of Cannes are…not good.

There’s also this:

I’d say more mixed. Though they do tend to skew towards the middling. Indiana Jones is not meant to be high art, it’s a pulpy, popcorn serial. Will have to see what actual audiences make of it.

OB

I heard quite good, though criticism and befuddlement about the final reel, though I have not heard spoilers. Just that it was kind of nuts.

I don’t think Cannes or early screenings are all that helpful for reviews, though.

An in-depth review that I read placed the Dial among the Top Three of the Indiana Jones movies.

That’s not hard, you only have to beat Temple of Doom…

ToD is leagues ahead of Crystal Skull.

Exactly what I said, to be in the Top Three, you only have to beat ToD, because Crystal Skull is far behind.

Gotcha, makes sense - yes I agree that TOD is behind Raiders (of course) and Last Crusade as well, so that’s fair.

ToD has its flaws, but it’s still a great movie. If the new flick is as good as it was, I’ll be happy… and very surprised.

I would not call ToD a great movie (though I may need to see it again, I haven’t seen it this millennium), but I agree that if they reach ToD levels of quality it would be a nice suprise.

The Guardian gave it 3/5, but the review itself was overall positive. If I’d read it without seeing the rating, I’d have guessed it was a 4 or 4.5. it sounds like the kind of movie that’s a lot of fun if you don’t over analyze it.

The review describes the plot in some detail, so don’t read it if you prefer a less spoiled experience.

I saw a headline, “Cannes give DoD a lukewarm five minute ovation.”

How do you give a tepid five minute ovation? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Clap slowly while yelling ‘ Raoul!’? :person_shrugging:

For a 2023 sequel featuring an octogenarian hero and extremely well-trodden ground to beat anything made in the golden era is quite an achievement, and something not many people believed.
