I enjoyed it. Didn’t have super high expectations, but it was a perfectly serviceable Indiana Jones movie. I had to suspend a lot of disbelief, but that’s nothing new.
I liked it better than Temple of Doom and Crystal Skull, not as much as Raiders and Last Crusade.
I don’t get the hate for Phoebe Waller-Bridge. I liked her. She was smart, snarky, and confident. That seems to be a plus in male action heroes, but a minus for women? Fooey on that. She was a lot less annoying than the woman in Temple of Doom, that’s for sure–but that’s not a high bar to clear.
I saw it today! It was good. Lots of Nazi Punching, which was awesome. Less adventure than I would like and more feelings-stuff, but the girl was not annoying at all and the kid was cool too.
I loved Sallah and the other references. Why no Ke Huy Kwan? That was probably my only sadness.
I did like the bit with Archimedes - are we doing spoilers or not? I will be discreet. But I do wish the end was slightly different - I wish he had stayed. But yes, it would have messed things up.
I struggle a lot with Temple of Doom. It is a little hard to watch the degrading of Indian people, and man the girl is so annoying. But in the 80s it was like the only reference Indian people got on TV! I love Amrish Puri!
I re-watched all of them with my son so we can go to see the movie tomorrow.
I found Temple of Doom to be a miserable experience for about the first 1 hr 20 minutes, then amazing in the final 40 minutes. It’s not a fun movie until the big escape.
Saw the movie today–it happened to be playing at the IMAX theater right next to my hotel. I enjoyed it as a fun, action-packed Saturday afternoon type flick.
On the way out, I overheard a father and his young son talking. I think it perfectly illustrates the range of opinions you’re likely to see about it.
Dad: That was the stupidest movie I ever saw!
Son: Nuh-uh! I thought it was great!
eta: I must say, the horse chase is the best one I’ve seen since True Lies.
I’m seeing it today and get ready, I like Crystal Skull a lot. We’ll see what I think.
I’m sure some of you have heard that the Star Wars prequels have had a critical reassessment by the kids who were young from 1999-2005.
I’m not doing that with Crystal Skull(I was 30 when it was released). I liked it then and re-watched it this year. I like it now. Perfect? No. Better than Temple of Doom? Much better.
Well, about the those trolling rumors. If we’re talking about the same thing, there is a quick shot in the trailer that does not appear in the finished film - Indy and Helena using a lever to apparently roll a large, somewhat familiar-looking boulder down a chute.
That shot lines up pretty well with those early rumors about the ending, and the fact it doesn’t appear in the movie now indicates there might have been some last-minute editing and reshoots. But who knows?
As for the movie? I thought it was good, certainly not the unwatchable disaster the early reviews were making it sound like. It’s light-years better than the last one.
It was okay. I was surprised how kind of boring it was in spots. My mind was wandering at some points. I didn’t hate it. I loved some of the set piece’s, especially the beginning in New York (in case you’re curious the parade they were portraying occured in August 1969). The end was kind of weird even for Indiana Jones but I sent with it. It was fine is all I got.
Not that weird that they were separated, and on the verge of divorce. It was explained as being a result of the combat death of their son (presumably Mutt).
I was impressed by the de-aging technology. There were only a few instances were it seemed like Harrison Ford’s face was edging towards the uncanny valley.
Spoiler question about the last 5 minutes of the movie:
Did they digitally* age-up Karen. Zero judgment from me, but the last I saw her was Crystal Skull, which I realize was 15 years ago. I thought she looked much older than I would have expected.
I enjoyed it more than I expected - was a nice, old-school Indiana Jones and I liked that most of the back story/flashbacks/etc are to Raiders & Crusade and not so much the others that I have thankfully blocked from my memory. I thought Phoebe Waller Bridge was great though I am a little selfish and rather see her more as a creator of Fleabag doing more like that and not the latest in a string of Indiana Jones female sidekicks. I do appreciate she was at least not a romantic sidekick and that they brought Marion back at the end.
Edited to add- knew that the horse stealing was coming and enjoyed every moment of the ensuing chase…
At one point, someone (perhaps Helena) called Indiana a “grave robber”. That was interesting as it seemed to acknowledge that what the character did was wrong.
I guess I liked it just fine. Just doesn’t match up to a Raiders or Last Crusade. I feel a bit short changed these days where they no longer shoot on location, or build sets, or do practical stunt work and instead use CGI for everything. I find when watching cartoony action scenes my mind starts to wander.
I can remember River Phoenix running through the circus train shot for shot and it all made logical sense. Watching Indy on top of the train in the dark rain was such a frantic mess I just kind of went with it but never felt any real tension in it.
Just saw it and thought it was pretty good. The length didn’t bother me; they timed the action sequences such that the film moved at a good pace and I never found myself getting bored. The story was actually fairly easy to follow. Phoebe Waller-Bridge did a good job as the sidekick and Mads Mikkelsen was a good villain.
I particularly thought it was a good plot twist that Mikkelsen’s character was planning to go back in time and kill Hitler, in the hopes that a more competent Fuhrer would then take power (like one who would know not to invade Russia). I did figure the twist out fairly early though, when the character made the remark about “you didn’t win the war, Hitler lost it.”
The de-aging of Harrison Ford during the prologue sequence was well done, I thought. It never came across as looking physically weird to me. The only issue is that they can’t de-age Ford’s voice; the movie had a 40-something year old Indy with the worn, gravelly voice of an 80 year old.
