VNV Nation is often classified as “synth pop” so I’ll assume you might be interested in similar bands, like:
Assemblage 23. My personal favorite at this time, I recommend the album “Failure,” with the amazing dance-floor song “House on Fire” and the heartbreaking “Disappoint.”
Also,
Covenant
Apoptygma Berzerk
I’m sure the more informed synthpop fans will be along soon with more info…
Athamay
Bell Morte
Corpus Delicti (classic really)
Cinema Strange
Mesh
Crematory
Born for Bliss
Cruxshadows & Faith and the Muse (both excellent bands, I get to see them a lot here in NYC).
Darc Entries
And One
Wolfsheim
I could go on and on and on, but these should get you started
I’ve started my collection of Mittlealter music (basically medieval or medieval inspired music) which tends to be popular in the goth scene, specially in Germany but now I gotta listen to some old school goth stuff!
So many of the bands listed in these threads are either foreign, or hard to find the CDs for. I don’t have broadband (or even decent dialup), so I can’t download any songs, and there isn’t any ‘alternative’ music stores around here that would carry CDs from underground bands.
So, I’m probably going to look like a fool asking this, but is there any goth/industrial (asking more about goth, though) music that I can find in a fairly common store? I’d rather buy a CD than find someone else to download songs for me (yeah, I’m like that :P).
And before I get ragged on for looking like a poser, I’m not saying I’m goth or whatever, I’m saying I just want to find some music that I like.
Hmmm, yes, many good goth/industrial bands are European. If you lived near NYC I’d be able to point out 10 good places to start, but I haven’t a clue about where you live.
My suggestion would be to look around in your area for goth clubs. Go in one night and ask around. You might also catch a decent band performing (and maybe strike up a conversation with the DJ, he should know what’s what in your area).
Also, look for these bands on online stores. Amazon carries some of these bands, you cna also try amazon.de. Finally, check out some of the record labels for these bands, they usually sell CD’s from their sites and most will ship overseas.
Music magazines dealing with these genres is another option, though I’m only familiar with a couple of German ones like Orkus.
A couple more bands:
London after midnight, assemblage 23, l’ame immortalle, Deine Lakein.
Goth or Industrial music that you should be able to find in any local music store:
Christian Death KMFDM (the songs they used to play at the goth club I frequented were Godlike and Virus, more often than not) Foetus Inc aka Scraping Foetus off the Wheel or any of the other many incarnations. Sink and Nail are the two albums I prefer. Souxie & the Banshees. Not my cup of tea, but there you go. The Cure, duh. Particularly goth albums are Pornography & Faith The Revolting Cocks. Beers, steers and queers! yeeeehaw! Diamanda Galas Skinny Puppy Einstürzende Neubauten. Halber Mensch is a good one. Dead Can Dance, Into the Labyrinth Bauhaus, once again, not my bag, but whatever Nina Hagen The Faint Pigface, my suggestion would be Fook, god I miss that album The Cranes 1st album, Wings of Joy Tones on Tail
laughs I live 15 minutes outside a town of 40k in Saskatchewan, Canada. A club? Uh, I know of one nightclub, which caters to the 20/30-something yuppie worker. The rest you get are bars. It is a farming community - about as Catholic and suppressed as you can get, I guess.
Bands? Oh, you mean 80’s rock tribute bands? Or Walter Ostanek, Polka King?
And my status as an obsessive maniac would be revoked if I didn’t recommend you get Sensucht by Rammstein, in my humble, maniac opinion, one of the greatest albums ever
Nailbunny is my favorite poster today, if only for mentioning Foetus and Diamanda. Foetus (James/Jim/J.G. Thirlwell) is one of the inventors of Industrial: there’d be no NIN without him. His other incarnation, Steroid Maximus, is brilliant brilliant stuff.
And Diamanda Galas is a true goddess.
Overlooked so far: Danielle Dax, the godmother of Industrial music and one of my musical goddesses.
And Fishbone. What do you get when you cross, say, Outkast with NIN? You get Fishbone. One of the alltime greatest bands ever.
interface2x will shortly be in to propose to all of you. He already proposed to me for liking goth music.
I am in love with Assemblage 23. Seabound’s Hooked is an excellent song, extremely bouncy, as is Stromkern’s Re-Align and Anthrax. BlutEngel is a fun uber-goth band. And One is great.
Assemblage 23’s Lullaby and Cocoon are my two favourite songs right now. And Bruderschaft’s Forever- VNV’s vocalist sings it.
Did I hear my name? The offer still stands, Lissla.
