I managed just now. That “you ran out of attempts dummy” thing got very old.
I even received an e-mail from the Board informing me someone had tried unsuccessfully five times to log in on my account. The e-mail even included the IP address of the supposed offender.
Same experience. I’ve changed my password twice.
Had to log in again after just a brief time not posting.
There’s speculation down in the Pit Thread. Since it involves another Poster, I won’t say anything more here.
I’m having the reply problem as well with Tapatalk. Can read, but can only post from my laptop.
The problems you’re seeing likely stem from the protective measures we’re using. We’ll try to get things worked out in due course.
Nice to be back. Thanks to all involved behind the scenes working on this.
Thank you, sir, for thinking that we have either of those.
I kept wishing we had an alternate site to gather. I feared the dope might never come back and I’d never get to talk to any of you guys again.
:shiver:
Do you do Facebook? There’s a Straight Dopers group on there. Or the Giraffe Boards.
I keep getting posts that I’ve already read when I tell a thread to send me to “view first unread”.
Clicking UserCP always brings up the login screen, even if I’m currently logged in when I click it. That’s a major bummer for those of us who keep track of our subscribed threads with UserCP.
EDIT: Correction: I don’t have to re-login if I click the user CP link at the top of each page, but I do if I click my bookmark:
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/usercp.php?
I use that bookmark all the time, even during sessions where I already have multiple SDMB tabs open. Having to re-login every time I use my bookmark (which doesn’t require scrolling to the top of whatever forum page I’m on) kind of blows.
Yay! Just wanted to repeat what others have said - thanks to all those who worked to get things back up and running!
I now have a reply button, but it gives me an “you do not have permission” error when I actually try to post.
I also apparently got logged out on my computer after a while.
Looks like everything’s working for me, although I haven’t tried ever possible function.
I added a sock earlier (clearly labeled as a sock) in an attempt to get into the board. It appeared to successfully register it, but then I starting getting the same message for that (bad password, too many attempts, wait 15 minutes, etc.).
Would it be safe to try to log in with it and delete it, or would the software hit me for two different logins from the same IP?
To paraphrase some Dr. Seuss characters: “I am here, I am here, I am here!”
Haven’t tried any other functions yet, but for now, I’m glad to be back.
Can’t stay logged in for more than 5 minutes.
I just discovered something annoying that I assume happens because of the safety measures. People often post links to other posts. When you click on them they open in a new tab. This worked fine in the past but now, the new tab seems to think that you’re not logged in. I tried reloading the new tab but it still thought that I was logged out. Assuming then that I had gotten logged out somehow, I went back to the original tab and reloaded it. It still showed me as logged in. So the same browser has me logged in in one tab but not in the other.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen this kind of behavior on a website before. Obviously it’s related to how login sessions are now maintained and likely related to the long hash in the URL, which doesn’t exist in old links. New links will presumably have the hash, which raises a potential issue, which I hesitate to post publicly but which could be a serious problem. Maybe I’ll do some testing send a PM to Ed.
I got one of those as well and it wasn’t my IP; I didn’t bother to trace or investigate it at all. I just wrote it off as part of whatever hit the Board. I assume nothing was breached and our passwords are safe?
(Well – as safe as any password it.)
