Internet Explorer Browser Questions

Can anyone tell me what controls the size of an IE browser window? That is, when you click on a hyperlink on some websites, IE opens a new window - but it’s usually not maximized, and it’s always some goofy size. There is no rhyme or reason to it, apparently. Sometimes you can size the window (to something less than maximized) and it might reopen at the same size each time - but only if you close not the “main” browser window or change websites. Argh - is it something the fucking hyperlink sets?!

Also - those cute little icons some websites put next to their entries on your favorites menu - where do they disappear to? Sooner ot later they all revert to that despicable Microsoft icon.

I hate to say it, but these things have been bugging me for almost 10 years.

Generally speaking, non-maximised windows can be made to open in a specific size and position by doing this:

Open only one IE window
Resize and reposition it
Close it

  • Sounds simple, but it often seems not to work because if another browser window is open (say, minimised to the taskbar), the settings won’t take.

it is possible for web pages to control the browser window size though, so you might have a pop-up window that you can’t enlarge beyond a certain size.

When I open a browser window from the desktop or taskbar, it opens maximized. That much I knew how to do (although, sometimes even this window opens to a goofy non-maximized size, why? I don’t know). It’s when the maximized browser window is open and a hyperlink opens ANOTHER browser window that the problem occurs. I would prefer not to open another window, but some hyperlinks open new windows automatically in defiance of your browser settings. Google websites are deadly in this regard, as are many porn sites (other people tell me, heh-heh, I would never have know that first-hand, npi).
