Haven’t used the computer in over a week, come back to the Dope and (even as I’m writing this) the computer will occasionally scroll the screen up or down a few lines at random intervals. Even if I sit back and refrain from touching the mouse or keyboard. Any ideas on the problem?
Are you using Firefox? Try clicking the middle mouse button and see if that helps.
No, I’m using I.E. and my mouse has a left and right button along with a center scrolling wheel.
Bumping this because I also have this problem intermittently, and would like to know why, too.
Alright, I posted this a month ago. The problem seemed to lighten up for a while but its back. And now its got another symptom. My computer has occasionally “gone back a screen” while surfing the net (as if I had hit the back button), even though my hand *was not * on the mouse. My wife has had this happen to her a couple of times as well. When the screen has started “twitching” (scrolling up a few lines and then down several lines, then back up, etc), we have tried turning the mouse upside-down (do disengage the wheel) and it didn’t stop it. So I don’t think its a hardware issue. I don’t find any viruses on the system. It has to be some kind of software problem, right? Could it be the mouse driver?
And again to clarify: I use IE with all the latest updates, a Compaq Presario, a two button mouse with center scroll wheel. (the mouse does not have the extra buttons to let you click “back” or “forward” through browsed web pages.
This is obnoxious. Any ideas? Anyone?
Well, winter’s coming, which means dry air indoors. Anyone who has a cat knows that static electricity runs rampant in the winter, often to the chagrin of Kitty. Electronics are also affected by ESD, and it wouldn’t surprise me if this seemingly random behavior isn’t static related. Ok, not hugely likely, but certainly within the realm of possibility. You can try an Antistatic Mouse Pad and see if that helps.
Happens to me too. At first I thought it was some kind of stupid virus, because it only happened when reading my email. But it started happening at other times too. I think it is something wrong with the mouse. Turning the wheel or shaking the whole mouse seems to fix it for a while.
sometimes my browser goes back a page when I hit the backspace key. Fortunately, it doesn’t happen often enough to piss me off and make me do something about it.
My cell phone causes my computer to do strange things when it is sending/receiving communications. The most notable one is that my mouse will begin going straight up or down. It doesn’t happen all the time so it took me a week to figure out.
