iOS 7 text msg - not always getting an alert?

Am I crazy or is the message function in iOS 7 crap? I’m having a helluva time picking a tone that I can actually hear (they seem quieter somehow) and I’m not always getting a tone for the message either. Come to think of it, I have the buzzer set to some long and obnoxious rhythm too so that I might hear or feel that, but last night as I was texting back and forth w/ someone one of her answers came through while I had the phone in my hand and there was no tone and only one very brief buzz of vibrate.

I’m not generally glued to the thing, it usually lives on the counter or in my purse if I’m out. In the past I’ve been able to hear it from another room but now I’m missing texts that I should have heard. I really don’t want to be one of those obsessively checking, but I’ve got stuff going on that sort of requires brief text check-ins and notifications. It could be done by phone, but since the content of information to be passed is a few words at most it’s a nuisance.

Hrmpf. I hate change. Git offa ma lawn, kid.

I’m using iOS 7 and haven’t experienced this problem, but then I don’t get a lot of texts. There’s a couple of things you can check or change if you haven’t already, though. First, the old tones are still available in Settings > Sounds. Scroll to the bottom of the list and you should see Classic > . This leads to the same selection of tones from the previous OS, one of which is “Tri-tone”, the original text message alert. Second (and I know this seems obvious, but), have you checked the volume level in Settings to make sure it’s as loud as you want it? If you’ve also selected “Change with Buttons” you might be lowering the volume inadvertently by hitting the volume buttons on the phone accidentally.

Sorry, that’s all I’ve got. I haven’t noticed the alert sounds being any quieter than they were, myself.

Yep, volume controls were the first thing I checked. I may be missing texts I guess not because of volume, but because they don’t always come with an alert?

Maybe it is just my old phone :frowning:

You can set certain contacts to silent. Next time it happens, edit the contact and see if the Text Tone has been changed.

Also, is there a little crescent moon icon in the status bar at the top?

Nope, no moon icon and text tone the same.

Ah well. I’m going to get a new phone next summer, I guess I’ll just live with it. Thanks though!

Actually: did you have the message app open to that same conversation at the time? I think that’s how it works - if you’re already looking at the conversation it doesn’t give you the full alert.
