Iowa lady runs over girl with car because the girl "Looked Mexican"

She’s been charged with a second hate crime for an incident at a convenience store after she hit the girl.

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it is naive to pretend it is not a duck. Nothing is helped by pretending we don’t know with reasonable certainty that the woman who hates Mexicans so much she is willing to run them over is a Trump supporter. People who are that racist tend to support Trump, and Trump has directly encouraged these exact beliefs.

And saying we “blame everything on Trump” is a lame cop out. It is trivially a strawman–it is easy to find gripes that do not blame Trump. Of course, it isn’t meant to be 100% literal–but that only makes it a worse cop out. There is no way that something that isn’t even literally true could be a valid counterargument.

People have made arguments for why Trump can be blamed. If you disagree, you are of course free to offer counterarguments. But “you blame everything on Trump” is not one. Even if it were true (which it isn’t), it would have no bearing on whether Trump can be blamed in this situation.

I believe you are a newish lawyer, right? Could your claim that we “don’t know” be more because you are used to the court standard? We’re not going for reasonable doubt, or even trying to prove Trump is liable. The argument is just that Trump’s rhetoric has made things like this situation more likely.

And, of course, that she is likely a Trump supporter. But, again, it is highly unlikely that someone who hates Mexicans this much that she even admits that racism was her motivation of attempted murder to cops is anti-Trump. Trump’s rhetoric about those things is part of why people are anti-Trump.

The only way someone that bigoted and hateful might possibly be “anti-Trump” is if she’s bitter and disillusioned that President Donald “They’re rapists (and some, I assume, are good people)” Trump is just a lot of big talk and not much action: He hasn’t actually built The Wall, or banned all Muslims, or put all of the Mexican children in cages. Heck, he still hasn’t even had Hillary Clinton locked up! (Also, his most favorite daughter is married to a Jewish guy.) I have read that some of the real hardcore White Power types have turned on the piece of shit for those sorts of reasons.

But even that would still put a lot of blame on Trump, the bloviating race-baiting demagogue, for stirring up the deplorables, even if he fundamentally is too low-energy and incompetent to be the true American dictator of their Alt-Right dreams.

I think it speaks volumes about the character of people when their first reaction to hearing of someone getting hurt is how can that be used politically.

 Yeah folks, this is no time for Pointing Fingers and Politicizing Tragedy. We’ll let you know when the appropriate time arrives for acknowledging the entirely predictable connections between deliberate political incitement of racism and xenophobia and individual acts of violence fueled by racism and xenophobia. (Hint: Never. We want you never to acknowledge them.)

Yes, it’s just despicable how when people get hurt, people of low character want to discuss the causes of how those people got hurt. It’s like how when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, some people of similar low character didn’t just send thoughts and prayers. Their first reaction was to use the tragedy politically as some kind of weak excuse to end isolationism and start fighting the Japanese!

“Of course the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. But that doesn’t eliminate the idea that so did some Germans.”

Yes it is all Trump’s fault. Trump = the new Godwinizer.
Wrong again. While Googling for a definitional cite that Godwinization implies inappropriate comparison, Google rewarded me in spades with this example:
hey, remember Steve Schwartzmann comparing attempts to close the carried interest loophole to the Nazi invasion of Poland?
I don’t have a cite but my impression is that this sort of craven evil as gone up in frequency since the Flatulent Hater was put in charge. Some of the evil-doers have specifically stated they were emulating this heinous Leader.

Like my signature! :stuck_out_tongue:

(Which, in case it changes some day, I guess I should specify that at the time of this posting is a quote from Frank Zappa/Mothers’s Trouble Every Day: “I’m not black, but there’s a whole lotsa times I wish I could say I’m not white.”)

The funny thing is, the company I work for has an office in Iowa. And every time I see a headline like this, it makes me wonder if it is someone I know from work.

Yeah, back in 2001 my brother in law got kicked to death by a Nazi skinhead who kept calling him a Jewboy (multiple witnesses, it was in front of a diner). The fact that he isn’t does not change the fact that he is dead. Trump is just a reflection of what this country really is. Don’t really like the phrase “This is not who we are.” It is exactly who “we” are. What are you going to do about it?

“What are you going to do about it” is not a shrug but a challenge.

Honestly I blame Obama for this.

I’m not sure how or why, I’ll get back to everyone on that.

It’s probably an unforeseen consequence of Obamacare that this woman had sufficient healthcare that she didn’t die from her meth habit years ago.

Blaming a meth bender for her incident is going to be tougher. Looks like this is kind of a hobby of hers:
“In the latest charge, Franklin was accused of leaving a roadway, travelling onto a sidewalk and hitting a 12-year-old boy in an apartment complex in Des Moines. The boy suffered minor injuries. Witnesses to the crash told police that the vehicle accelerated prior to the crash, drove onto the sidewalk and hit the boy, CBS Des Moines affiliate KCCI reported.”

Thank you! There we go!

“Thanks for nothing Obama.”

Shockingly, racism was actually not invented by Trump. Crazy, I know!

All sarcasm aside, this woman is a piece of shit and I hope she gets everything she deserves. Sad, disgusting excuse for a human being.

Trump is an idiot. He’s never invented anything. He’s not capable. What he does is stoke the fires, no heavy lifting.

I guess it’s too bad this lady didn’t just pull out a gun and shoot the girl down. She’d have all the usual crew her singing her praises as a self defense patriot.

Where are the usual shit-head apologists who like to pop into threads and defend assholes who run people down with their cars? Maybe waiting for the talking points to arrive in their in-box. “The kids were probably waving sticks at the nice lady! They deserved it!”

Nah, the standard tactic now is to try and “prove” that the agressor is actually ANTIFA and so we need to ban them.
