Is a president that you dislike, still "your" president?

After Election Day 2008, I saw social media of “Not my president,” and plenty of that after Election Day 2016 as well.

So - by however you define “your,” would you say a president that you oppose is “your” president? Not a trick question, just asking how everyone approaches or defines this. FWIW I am of the view that a president of the country of my citizenship is “my” president however much I may wince at or dislike it.

Over my lifetime I’ve been less than pleased with a few presidents, but they were still “my” president. Not so today; he’s not my president.

Same here. Obama was, Trump is. And so forth.

But Warren G. Harding is right out.

This.

I agree with Velocity. I’m a U.S. citizen and a voter, so as much as it pains me, I accept the lawful authority of Donald Trump as President, even though I didn’t vote for him and hold no personal loyalty to him.

By the same token, I expect him to uphold the Constitutional process of law in all matters of the Federal government.

Yes.

I’m not very happy with the poll options, actually. By lumping Trump in with mere “candidates that you oppose,” it continues the conservative falsehood that what’s going on right now is perfectly normal.

One would be suffering from “classic delusion” if not!

Trump is a bottomless pit of ego that is threatening to suck us all down and he makes me sick. But I am stuck with him for now, and for now he is my President.

I am a 61 year old atheist Democrat environmentalist.
Am I the current President’s citizen?

Yes, he’s my President. He’s not the first President I don’t like, and he surely won’t be the last. . . but he’s unique for lots of reasons. None of those reason make him “not my President.” They just make me slightly queasy whenever I contemplate the fact that he IS my President.

No, and you weren’t the previous President’s citizen either. The President doesn’t decide who is or is not a citizen - that’s in the Constitution.

Yeah. He’s not only not “my” president, I don’t think he’s a president in any sense of the word. He’s just an embarrassment - and this has nothing to do with politics. He’s an embarrassing human being.

Well golly, let’s just close this thread then, because everyone’s poll answers are technically “Yes”.

This.

Legally speaking, yes, he’s the president of every American citizen, and I recognize that.

But, behaviorally and attitudinally, he’s made it clear that he really only cares about the views of (and adulation from) his base, which seems to be consistently at about 40% of voters.

I am by no means a member of his base, and it’s clear to me that he has no interest whatsoever in the issues that are important to me.

Ask again when he starts to be a President.

Ask him if the people in P.R. are citizens. Because he sure as hell isn’t treating them like they are.

Irrelevant question.
My objections to the current POTUS include, but are not limited to, dangerously close relations between his staff, family & possibly himself, & the Russian Government.

I may have a vigorous discussion with someone over the merits or otherwise of the Prime Minister of the day, but we’d both close ranks if he or she were attacked.

I take no responsibility for Jefferson Davis.

But the rest are all “my” Presidents. Even Trump.

I don’t have a president or prime minister - my country does. I, personally, am not in his chain of command, and therefore he is not “mine”.

I’m loyal to my country and to the rule of law. Not to any individual.
