Hmm I have the exact oposite problem. Because I look they way I do people automatically assume I’m a threat. They’re not sure a threat for what, but because I’m a big ugly scary guy I must be a threat for something. I was hanging out with some friends today at a good friend’s birthday party. A couple guys told me they knew I was at the wrong place because this wasn’t my kinda crowd. Also this girl I have been friends with forever, but haven’t seen in a while, gave me a hug, and her new boyfriend whom I had never met, told me to stop making him look bad and getting on his territory.
I get that a lot, but it’s because people feel they know me well very quickly and see everyone else picking on me and having fun. I have incredibly thick skin and normally don’t mind at all- indeed, I love throwing out good comebacks, but some days I just don’t feel like it or something hits a sore spot. When that happens I just remove myself from the situation and call it a day.
I would guess that since you’re so outgoing the reasoning is the same- they feel that they know you well already and are on a much deeper comfort level then you feel.
Here is a quote from a book that, I think anyway, fits in this topic…
Esprix, at least those people are still looking at you and chatting rather than looking around for quick exit
I am not the chattiest person with strangers, but I can self-deprecate with those I know well.
And sometimes people can just be jerks for no reason at all.
“…I’ll be the first to make fun of myself, so including someone in the joke is one way for me to make someone feel comfortable with me…” probably has a lot to do with it. YMMV, etc.
But I feel your pain. And I had the unfortunate grace to learn that not everyone means it as lightheartedly as they seem. Live and learn, I suppose.
These microwave individuals are obviously exploiting the social contract. Suicidally cheating the system without genetic repercussision… They aren’t digital at all! Why? Because it’s the Descartian oligopoly… but I’m getting too far ahead of myself just sketching it out.
Let’s say you are pinball machine. The one with the topless vampira motif, and these pre-Columbian individualists are the pinballs… It all make sense now! Or should I be angry that you can’t grasp it?
<blink blink>
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure…

Waverly, step away from the Justhink threads.
So that’s why I keep failing! :smack:
