Is it time to leave yet?

I won’t turn and run. This is my country. The longest a president can last is 8 years, and the worst ones only 4. The Trump vultures are coming to roost, and even the Donaldists will see the damage done eventually.

Trump isn’t really the problem. He’ll probably be gone in two years, certainly in six. Trump is a symptom. As far as I can see, nobody is really addressing the cultural and institutional failures that brought us Trump.

Further, although his presidency may be quite short, the damage he has done already will take a longer than four years, or eight, to repair. He has drained the civil service of expertise; he has fostered a climate of corruption; he has put some seriously right-wing voices into the judiciary. So although he’ll be a memory soon, some of his legacy will last the rest of your life. The question is really how much, and how quickly and substantially will people get around to repairing it.

So yes, as others have said, it’s a balance. Do you put your own quality life, and perhaps your immediate family’s, ahead of your country as a whole, and leave? I did, just as my ancestors did when they came to America. Or do you stay, and sacrifice for the greater good? I certainly admire that, but equally I think it’s reasonable to say that you only get one life, and you’re not willing to spend the rest of it pushing boulders uphill.

Rather than a symptom, I like to think of Trump as a PET scan. Not really a pleasant experience by itself, but it shows you where the cancer is.

Funny how liberals all threaten to leave, but never do it.

Well they tried it once and then Gerald Ford even pardoned them. So I guess it did work that time. There are plenty of ex-Pats living abroad, but keep making incorrect statements.

I am liberal. I left. Your statement is incorrect, though “almost never” is probably accurate.

All liberals threaten to leave, huh? And you’re saying this in the middle of a thread where several “liberals” have said they wouldn’t leave.

I swear sometimes I can actually see facts ricocheting off a conservative’s forehead.

I don’t know if it will work for Americans (citizens of the USA) but education, even private “trade school” type career colleges can offer a way to enter Canada on a student/ work visa and work towards permanent residency. I teach at one for care aides and we have many many international students. Some have degrees and careers in their own countries, some were here on visitors visas and didn’t want to leave. Some are refugees. We actually sponsored a Syrian refugee to go through our program, and a year after her start she us employed making union wages and her life has changed dramaticly.

Another poster up thread said please don’t co.e to Vancouver. We are aleeady overcrowded etc. I sort of agree. That’s where I am am. Rents are awful.

But if you want to go back to school, even temporarily education may be your solution.
