I’ve checked the couch cushions - John Mace wasn’t there.
I’m still in touch with various other long-departed Dopers. Apparently there is this thing called “a life” that some people acquire that causes them to spend less time on internet messageboards. Sounds ghastly.
We don’t use the L word here.
But after a few days, got curious enough to come back for a quick peek. (Had to get TubaDiva to let me back in – no clue what my password had been, or even what since-abandoned email address I’d been using.)

Doing pretty good, all in all. My job is trying to drive me nuts, but it’s mostly along the lines of “we really value your thoughts on X, and Y, and Z…”, so I’m just way too popular for my own good.
Seems whenever somepne posts a thread saying they’re leaving the board or taking a break there are responses like, *“Don’t let the door hit you on the way out!” *and “Who are you again?” Some of it is joking but I think in general “goodbye threads” are considered ho-hum at best around here.
Then we have threads like this where people wish that “missing Dopers” had told us they were going to be away. I think “goodbye threads” should be encouraged, not mocked, because then we know in advance what’s up happening with our buddies.
If you’re offering them Brewster’s elderberry wine shouldn’t you be keeping them out of the basement? Or, maybe, the window seat?
Depends on the type of going-away post. Ones along the lines of “I need to spend more time out in the real world, gotta get away for a while” are received sympathetically. Flounce-off posts full of martyrdom and accusations and other drama get the first kind of response. Both are deserved.
Preach it! I got run out of the AOL board for saying that.
