not sure if this belongs in Politics, so feel free to move. Mark Robinson is a Black Republican LtGovernor in North Carolina. Recently he has stated that the Civil Rights Movement cost the Black community freedom, and more absurdly said that Blacks owe Whites “reverse reparations”. Of course he also claimed “Black Panther,” was “[created by an agnostic Jew and put to film by satanic Marxists]. comments?
Here are a couple of articles with more detail.
I don’t mean this as snark but as a serious question: Is he mentally ill? If he sincerely believes all this crap he’s spouting, just how untethered from reality, or how deeply burrowed into the right-wing bubble, is he?
he also attacked Parkland victims
More importantly; are North Carolina voters mentally ill? They actually elected this man to state-wide office!
Correct me if I’m wrong, please, but my impression is that in most states (Texas is the exception), the election of Lt Gov is sort of an after-thought?
The first cite says he’s the front-runner to be the GOP candidate for governor.
Trump’s America. No matter your skin color, you can get to sit in the front of the bus if you are crazier than the crazies and hate louder than the haters. Voting for someone like them is proof that Republicans are not racist; they are acting rationally to agree what how he sees reality.
Or he may be mentally ill. That’s the scary part. Nor is it new. Governors and Senators and other elected officials have for the last century, especially in the South, talked and acted so crazy that it was indistinguishable from people who were institutionalized.
So you’re saying he’s MTG’s soulmate.
The thing is Republicans are racist as hell but they loooove Black conservatives precisely because it makes them feel like they aren’t really racist, after all they have a black friend. So given the choice between being just another black liberal politician or every conservatives black friend, some of the more ambitions might decide to sell out any principals of social justice they might have and join the dark side. That is the career path of Clarence Thomas used to get on the Supreme Court.

I know he’s not black, but who cares?
Just ask him, maybe he is.
He’s black-ish.
I vote mentally ill. Not the only one, remember Huey Long of Louisianna? He wanted to cap wealth at like 100 million and use the rest that was confiscated/nationalized to give every family $5000 and a basic income as I vaguely remember [on my phone so hitting google can be a bitch =) ] Though to be honest, I do wish we would start taxing hte rich again, I remember pre Regan when the tax rate for the rich was like double that of poor me [I think I figuured out that other than the deduction for my savings bond I was paying out a third of my income to the various government levels and that doesn’t even count sales tax or personal property tax on the farm and vehicles]
I’ve read a lot about Huey Long. He was not mentally ill. (Well, he may have been paranoid.) He was an anti-Trump. He was extremely capable at everything he did from a young age. He attacked the right enemies. He consolidated power in a non-democratic fashion but used that power to make life better for the lower-class that supported him. He didn’t grift them; he took the money from the rich and powerful.
By the end his paranoia ruled him, true. Private armies and rewritten constitutions are the end-game for every two-bit dictator. It’s also true that he did have enemies everywhere, mostly of his own making.
No way he would ever talk like Mark Robinson, though. When he called out bad guys they were real. Mostly.
He was so paranoid, he was sure people were out to get him!
Then he was assassinated.
All the King’s Men is an excellent movie that closely parallels Huey Long’s life and career. Highly recommended. And Mercedes McCambridge was very very good.
The novel is also very good. But I’ve read biographies that are even better. You can’t do his spectacular life in less than two hours.
