Is "Precious" star Gabourey Sidibe so obese she is in danger of early death?

Are you calling Justin fat?

Never miss a show. I get it from places I can’t talk about here. I’ve found from dropping the odd ref about that quite a few others do as well but he’s still pretty small noise over here. Private Parts would be the biggest thing some would know about.

LOL, Jesus Christ, woman- take it down a notch. I was just making a general statement, not attacking you personally or punching your mom.

Yes, I do believe that most folks would be pleased to have just one major success in their life, then have a nice, meaningful life otherwise. You don’t have to be a superstar to have a great life- twas my point, m’lady. My point is that Gabby, unlike a lot of celebs out there, seems intelligent and level-headed— she’ll have a great life whether she wins 100 Oscars or finishes her degree and does something “normal”.

'Cause I thought it needed to be quoted for the “She’ll survive off talent!” crowd. So in answer to the OP, yes, her weight poses some serious health risks, and if unchecked, will almost certainly curtail her lifespan.

I think both of you have different definitions of “successful” for a movie career and that’s what’s causing the disagreement, maybe? One definition is having a lot of good movies/roles under your belt. Another is just actually having a decent number of them, with a few being “hey, that was great!”.

It seems that you are in the first camp and Diosa is in the second camp. But I didn’t really think she was saying your point was stupid or anything.

No, I’m saying that whether she’s a movie star or not, the girl will have a great and wonderful life. She may not have a long term, successful (mega fame career), but she’s an intelligent, level headed, funny as fuck person- she’ll have a wonderful life. Maybe she will be a big movie star, but I’m just saying if she doesn’t, I’m sure she’ll be fine, too.

Sounds like you’re projecting a bit . . . we really don’t know anything about her. Plenty of funny as fuck people, a lot of them overweight, are in the ground now because they couldn’t cope with some inner demons. I think depression is a far more likely root of her obesity than genetics or “she just likes to eat.” People on some show were acting shocked that a happy person like Gabby was able to “fake” such pain on screen, and Robin Quivers (the black woman on the Stern show who has dealt with obesity herself) pointed out that you’re fooling yourself if you think she hasn’t had real pain in her life.

But you’re not projecting at all. Neither is Robin “I’m so self-loathing I work for Howard Fucking Stern” Quivers.

Seriously now… who hasn’t had pain? Most people live through it. No reason to assume that this girl is any more delicate a flower than most.

Well, I’m not at all arguing the girl has had a splendiforous life or anything- I don’t really know much more about her than I’ve seen on a few interviews here and there. I also should note I haven’t really commented one way or another about her weight or the cause of it (except earlier when I gave my two cents on how much I think she weighs). I certainly agree with you that there many contributing factors- certainly most of which are unapparent to us observers- that are contributing to her weight. And yes of course if she doesn’t get healthier, her life will be cut shorter than if she didn’t- no doubt. Basic science and all that :).

I suppose I am projecting from what I’ve seen, but by all accounts I’ve seen (not that, that makes it fact or anything at all), she is a smart lady. Health issues aside, she seems to have that type of personality that lends itself to success in life (which, of course, is subjective- one person’s success is another’s failure and all that stuff).

I’m not saying anything expect A) we don’t really know shit about her personal life, so it’s kinda weird to talk about how great and level-headed she is, and how her life is going to be great no matter what, and B) it’s pretty damn likely that she’s dealt with some pain in her life, either as a cause or effect of her severe obesity. That’s a lot different from “she’s great, she’s level-headed, she’s gonna have a great life, etc etc etc.”

Right, because the woman has no personality or intelligence and can’t think for herself. She just loves hearing that old line of bullshit. You have no idea how laughably wrong [and demeaning, and condescending] it is.

Hey, I have a lot more basis for thinking that Howard Stern is vile and Robin Quivers is self-loathing (what with them being on the radio every day, and all) than you do for thinking Gabby Sidibe isn’t ‘faking’ that pain.

No, you don’t. Not even close. I’ve studied obesity in college, as well as have very close friends and family who have struggled with it. I know how closely related it is to depression-- again, either as a cause or effect. I admit that I’ve never been obese, but I’ve been ~30lbs over where I want to be, so I’ve gotten a small small personal taste of what it feels like as well. You don’t know half of dick about Howard or Robin.

Just to randomly jump in on the Robin thing, I listened to Stern a lot in the 90s, and I never got the idea that she was self loathing. She is smart as a whip and has a great sense of humor. Never found her ‘self-loathing’. Haven’t really listened to Stern in years though.

Every time she squeezes out that forced, shrill cackling, all I hear is “God, I hate myself.”

Oh.

Nevermind, then!

Erm… I don’t know anything about Howard and Robin, who speak for themselves every day, but you have special insight about a woman who’s given a few interviews because she happens to be fat and you studied obesity.

What. The Fuck. Ever.

Really? You listen to the Stern show every single day? Really? Or you saw them on tv a few times and you read about them in the press every now and then. Tell the truth.

And I’ll tell you what: here is an article showing a strong 2-way correlation between obesity and depression, just like I said. Where is your support for Robin being “self-loathing,” and please do not post a picture of your butthole.

No, I don’t. Because I listened *enough *to find him vile and her self-loathing (and the rest of the cast of characters irritating), and decide I’m not interested in listening any more.

I’m sure there’s a correlation between obesity and depression. What I’m NOT convinced of is that the correlation gives you any special insight into Gabby Sidibe personally.

She seems to be backpedaling a bit now, but she certainly was implying that this girl (who will have a wonderful life!) will finish college and do something meaningful unlike people who sit on a messageboard and criticize. It’s a stupid attitude because you can apply that to just about anything people complain or criticize about.

If we applied the “I’m sure you’d like to be a movie star with one hit!” or “I’m sure they will do something meaningful with their life!” reasoning to most posts we’d have a very blank messageboard here.

I think Ms Sidibe did a great job in the movie. When I’ve seen her interviewed she seems very nice, down-to-earth and has a great attitude. I have nothing against her. I can’t say she’s a good actress based on one role no matter how great she was at that one role.

Do I think she’s going to have the career Oprah droned on about on the Oscar broadcast? No, I honestly don’t. Will she have some roles and be a working actress? Probably. Good for her.

Will she have a shortened life due to her morbid obesity? I have no idea. If she doesn’t lose weight I’d say she probably wouldn’t make it to 76 (average life expectancy for black females). Her business, certainly not mine. I hope for her sake she does lose weight.

Either way, I’ve given wayyyyyy more thought to this girl than I ever hoped to.
