Is the notification system down?

I just noticed something odd-- I was keeping an eye on the ’ Tonight’s Dinner: Enchiritos!’ thread, and I noticed that the OP had replied to a post I made, with a pull quote from my post and everything (post #10 in the thread). Yet I didn’t get a notification in my avatar in the upper right corner of my screen and it doesn’t show up in the notification list when I click on my avatar.

So what’s up with that-- some sort of server or Discourse glitch, or can a poster quote a post and reply without triggering a notification, for some reason? I don’t think I’ve ever seen this happen before, but maybe I just haven’t noticed and have missed replies to posts of mine in the past.

I’m getting all the notifications I expect, so it’s not universal.

What’s the “watching/tracking/normal/muting” setting for you on that topic?

I hadn’t changed anything that I know of. Also, I got a notification from somebody else who replied to my post in that same thread. It’s just the one post reply I mentioned that didn’t show up in my notifications.

Did you check your spam folder? Sometimes spam filters will grab single messages here and there but allow others from the same site.

It wasn’t an email notification that I didn’t get, it was an internal notification within this message board- the little number in the circle next to my avatar on the right of the SDMB header. And clicking on the avatar, the notification is nowhere to be found. But I’ve been getting notifications since then :man_shrugging:

Is there a chance that you had that thread open when the OP replied..?
I think that’s happened to me where I’ve been reading a thread and
someone replied to me and it didn’t show the little number notification,
presumably because discourse thinks I must already be reading the reply.

(Although I don’t remember not even getting a listing in the list of replies …)

This happened to me about a month ago but since then everything seems fine.

It was definitely odd.

I have that happen regularly enough I had considered starting a thread on it. I’ll get regular notifications telling me a thread I’m following got some replies, but I won’t get a notification if someone replies to me or quotes me. It’s often a surprise to see that I was quoted or replied to.

Yes, i did have the thread open, and that has happened to me as well, where the little number notification may briefly show and then disappear when I scroll up to the new post reply. So it’s easy to not notice there was a number notification at all. Or if I have replies in more than one thread and I click and view one, the number notification will also disappear, even though I still have unread replies.

But the notification usually always shows up permanently in the list of recent notifications when I click on my avatar. Just not in this one particular case that I’ve noticed.
