When there are replies to me, or replies to a thread I’m watching, a little number appears over my avatar on the top right, and when I click on it, I should see a list of the first parts of the replies. As of today, however, what I see instead is the thread (topic) title, not the reply.

I think so also. I looked in my notification list and it looks the same as ever. If it changed that dramatically, I’d notice.
Then again, we have many themes that behave differently, so this could have been a change in a different theme that doesn’t impact us but did affect @wolfpup. It’s difficult to know for sure.
Also different browsers, operating systems, settings, preferences, etc.
FTR, the theme I’m using is Straight Dope Light, and the described behaviour is the same both on my tablet and desktop.
But also FTR, I cannot rule out the possibility that I hallucinated the whole thing and there hasn’t actually been a change. But I could have sworn that in the past the drop-down that itemized replies actually gave me some information about the content of the replies, not just the thread/topic it was in.
If I’m misremembering and completely wrong about this – which I’m beginning to think I am – then consider this not a complaint but a suggestion for a potentially useful feature!
That happened to me. I was convinced that the Reply/Discard buttons under
the reply box were the same - both big and blue like the Reply.
I asked about it here and was told they’d always been different.
