Is there a list of known tags for text? (Bolding, strikethrough, etc)

I was in the middle of a post, when I thought to myself, “Self, I don’t know how to strikethrough text on the Dope. I wonder if there’s a list of all the permissible text tags available to edit with.”

I know the following:

“Brackets-B” bolds
“Brackets-I” italicizes
“Brackets-U” Underlines
“Brackets-Code”

Puts things in a code box

“Brackets-Quote”

. . . and then you’ve got the various color tags, the size tags, and the ubiquitous URL tag.

But what else is there? Is there a “strikethrough” set of tags?

I’ve got the gumption, I’m going to find a good ASCII character map and post it in this thread–that way I’ve got a ready, subsrcibed-to reference.

This is strikethrough on most boards

But not on this, apparently.

[strike]maybe this?[/strike]

At the very bottom of every screen is a table of Posting Rules, including the line that VB Code is ON. Click on that, and you get a list of all the tags available.

That’s exactly what I was looking for, thanks!

Oh, and sandra_nz, the strikethrough function is “[del]” . . .

Now. . . about that ASCII map. . .

bracket del /bracket give you a [del]delete[/del] strikethrough

In this short thread from March, Hypnagogic Jerk in Post 4 tells HazelNutCoffee how to link to a specific post in another thread and have the whole (other) thread available to scroll.

When I hover on a Post # in the top right corner nothing happens except the normally grey Post # becomes white (and stays white after hovering). No post number magically appears. Is my hovering technique substandard?

I would also be curious, when someone clicks on the link in the first sentence of this post, do the search terms I used to find it appear in red, as they do on my computer? If so, is there a way to avoid that? I don’t mind if they’re red on mine but I would rather they not be for someone clicking on the link.

Yes, anyone clicking on your link will see the search terms you used highlighted in red. There is a way around that, though. Your link is:

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=459341&highlight=link+specific+post

If you edit your link to remove “&highlight=link+specific+post” then the highlights will not appear as part of the link. I found this out because the same thing bothered me once.

[del]A-ha![/del]

Your hovering is fine, but your attention is trained in the wrong area. You must have your status bar visible, and the link to the post is in there. It will show:

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=9995446&postcount=6

the important part being:

p=9995446

[post=9994776]test[/post]

Cool it works!

Ok now, let me try this. First I’ll [post=9566028]link directly to Hypnagogic Jerk’s post[/post] while still allowing anyone who follows the link to scroll up and down the page it’s on. Thank you GuanoLad for that.

Now I’ll check to see none of my search terms are appearing in red. They’re not. Great. Thanks very much LurkMeister.

HazelNutCoffee [post=9566960]is a quick learner[/post]. I seem to require a little follow-up.

Mods, I think we ought to make this thread a sticky.

Whaddya say?

Either this thread, or an actual tested and approved list of codes would be a wonderful resource.

Especially a clarification of the differences between codes for:
Show single post only
Show post in thread
Show thread

I know it’s here, just a post or two higher up. I’m sure it’ll make sense after a decent sleep and a couple of re-reads, but having it all laid out clear and simple under a decriptive title would help all the newbies as well as sleep deprived me.

I found a link (there’s a plethora out there) for ASCII Characters, but strangely enough, I’m having a helluva time getting it to work here. . .

. . . but I have been getting by in the past by using the ‘Character Map’ function in my Windows OS.

See?

A sticky from me? I’d be honored! ©

IANA mod, but may I point out it’s already in a [post=7698936]sticky[/post]?

Or while hovering, left-click and select “copy link location”.

Oh, and the meta-tip: if you want to see how a post produced a particular effect, just click on “reply” for that post.

Holy crap! That post right there kinda takes the wind outta my sails for this thread.

Mods: if you so deem fit, g’head an’ close this one.
