And Trump rehabilitated Bush (the second one).
I’m having a hard time thinking of someone worse than Trump who is an existing politician. Sure, Trump is a moron but he won’t feel constrained to put establishment people into guardrail positions this time so all those “This guy is more dangerous because he’s smarter” guys are just going to be in the west wing anyway.
Conversely, none of the “smarter” guys strike me as petulant and pissy as Trump does so we get all the joy of smart guys trying to remake the government into MAGA utopia combined with a president who would sent the National Guard to someone’s house just because he’s mad at them today and needs to feel like a Big Man.
Trump is from a long-lived family. His father lived to 93 and his mother lived to 88. Three of his grandparents lived to 85, 88, and 96 (the other died of the Spanish flu at 49). So there’s no reason to think Trump, who will be turning 78 this month, won’t live through a second term.
How many Big Macs did his grandparents eat?
Trump is an obese man who had to be emergency hospitalized for Covid. I’m not saying he’s gonna live or die but I wouldn’t use his parents as the primary basis.
No. I can’t think of anyone worse who would be popular enough to warrant voting against. There definitely do not seem to be any who are actually trying to run for president. And, if you’re not popular enough, you can’t win anyways.
You’d need someone who was worse than trying to be dictator for life. I guess they’d need to be younger, and more anti-democracy. I’m sure they exist somewhere in the world, but none that I’ve heard of who could run in the US.
Now, yes, conceivably there could be someone so bad that I would vote for Trump: someone who is younger, would stay in power longer, who wants to be a dictator, and has actually gotten most of the country on board. Someone who has said they plan to use nukes as soon as they get into office. Stuff like that.
But I think, in the real world, Trump seems currently to be the only one threading the needle between being an awful authoritarian who wants to overturn our democracy and actually being popular with a significant group of people. I know there’s the fear of a more slick Trump in the future, but I don’t know of anyone who can fit that bill now.
I think an individual who ran for president, spent $13 million on his campaign, got himself on the ballot in 12 states, and received almost 70,000 votes must in some sense qualify as a politician.
I honestly can’t decide whether I would vote for Donald Trump over Kanye West. However, I can say that merely pondering that question has created strong incentives for day-drinking.
No, I can’t think of anybody I hate more than Trump.
Ted Cruz used to be #1 on my hate list, but Trump took his place, and not by a slim margin.
There are worse, more unstable politicians than Trump that have been mentioned here.
If presented with a choice between one of them and the Orange Peril, I’d pick a third-party or write-in candidate. There’s no law that says you must vote for the lesser of two evils.
NO!! … …
Sad to see there are those on this board that still somehow see Trump as better than Biden. I guess if raping, racist, moronic felons that want to overthrow the lawfully elected government are your jam, he fits the bill perfectly!
Maybe the SDMB can crowdfund to buy @Balthisar this sweatshirt:
It wouldn’t surprise me at all to discover their secret to longevity involved a serum made from the tears of tortured infants.
Many of the MAGA trolls have been mentioned. Hard to beat MTG. How about Tommy Tuberville? Not to be confused with Tommy Tutone (ya know, the 80’s one-hit wonder “eight-six-seven-five-three-ohh-nigh-ee-einn”). A religion nut and obstructionist supporting a government that literally does no governing. He’s dumb and unlikable in the extreme. It’s close, but I would take Trump over him.
I think I’d vote for Trump over Vladimir Putin, but there’s scant little difference.
Truly. I’ve never been one of those “I’m moving to Canada if so-and-so wins” guys. But if we ever reach the point where our two choices are Trump or someone a click better or worse than Trump, it’s time to vamoose.
“Who would you vote for, Hitler or Stalin?” Neither, I’m hightailing it somewhere else if that’s what our country has become.
While not exactly politicians (yet) there are a number of Televangelists that I would probably vote against in favor of Trump. For example Ken Copeland.
I think a number of the Trump wannabe candidates like MTG, Gaetz and Tuberville may actually be worse than Trump because in trying to imitate him they are actually becoming a caricature of him emphasizing his worse aspects to demonstrate their similarity.
That’s how I feel. To paraphrase PJ O’Rourke, he’s awful and terrible, but he’s awful and terrible within normal parameters.
McConnell will play the game because that’s what he does and is good at.
I dislike arguing against the premise but I’m trying to figure out a scenario where the choices are Trump and somebody worse than Trump.
Did Trump botch the convention and not get the Republican nomination, so he’s running as an independent? With SWTT running as the Republican nominee? In that case, I’m voting for Biden.
Did Trump get the Republican nomination and SWTT is running as an independent? Then once again, I’m voting for Biden.
Did Trump get the Republican nomination and SWTT get the Democratic nomination? I’m looking at all of the possible Democratic candidates out there and I can’t see any of them who are worse than Trump. You could just grab a Democratic Senator or Governor at random and I’d vote for them instead of Trump.
Did SWTT get the Republican nomination and Trump somehow became the Democratic nominee? Then I’m going to say how the fuck did that happen?
Ditto. I was a teenager in Louisiana when David Duke was a candidate for Governor.
I was nine or ten. I remember I’d never seen my mother involved in politics until then, and she spent all her free time volunteering for the Edwards campaign, she was so disgusted by Duke.
