Is there a song that you will ALWAYS love?

  1. “Sugar Sugar” by the Archies. (Go ahead and laugh, this song just makes me feel great. I feel sorry for kids today who don’t have anything nice to listen to.)

  2. “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon and Garfunkle. Anything by Simon and Garfunkle. “Parsley Sage Rosemary and Thyme” - heaven.

  3. “Der Commissar” by After the Fire, followed closely by “The Politics of Dancing” by Reflex. Both found on one of those greatest hits of the 80’s tapes of which I’ve so far worn out two copies of.

  4. “With or Without You” by U-2.

  5. “Operator” by Manhattan Transfer.

  6. “Love Shack” by B-52s. (see #1 above).

  7. “Last Exit to Brooklyn” by Gene Pitney. Anything by Gene Pitney. Why no recognition for this guy, when every two bit group in the land has a boxed set of CDs?

  8. “The Blue Danube”. “The Nutcracker Suite”. “Bolero”.

  9. 80’s tapes, of which I’ve worn out two so far.

That’s exactly what it’s called, from his ‘Unplugged’ album.
Clapton’s best work, IMHO.

And as long as I’m in here again, may I add:
‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’ - Procol Harum(sp?)

Der Kommisar was actually by Falco, which After the Fire released first using mechanical license(which allows a cover to be done and released against the will of the writer at a far higher royalty rate).

Songs that I will always love:

Twist In My Sobriety by Tanita Tikaram - It was my Star Search audition piece. I find the song poignant and moving.
Lord knows I have been at that place she sings about many times.

I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor - A powerful song of gaining strength after a bad relationship. I still like it even though I’m in a healthy relationship.

Nothing In Common by the Thompson Twins - A song that for me speaks of the truth of relationships and the work it takes to maintain them.

King and Queen of America by the Eurythmics - A wonderful song which captures the images foreigners have of the United States. I question whether the gestalt is wrong…

“Sir Duke” by Stevie Wonder

“Different People” by No Doubt

“Walking on Broken Glass” by Annie Lennox

“Morning Train” by Sheena Easton

“Weak” by SWV

“Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green

“Journey to the Past” from Anastasia

“Slow Like Honey” by Fiona Apple

“Brain Stew” by Green Day

“Loser” by Beck

“Hey Ladies” by The Beastie Boys

“Let’s Hear it For the Boy” from Footloose

“Pretty Good Year” by Tori Amos

“Always Be My Baby” by Mariah Carey

And there are oh so many more…

Try to guess MY age!

I was just thinking that when I read your post. Of course, that means Oncle Biere (Greensleeves) is probably around 450 years old.

“Fake Plastic Trees” - Radiohead
“A Day In The Life” - The Beatles
“Like A Rolling Stone” - Bob Dylan
“Gimme Shelter” - Rolling Stones
“Canon in D” - Pachelbel
“Don’t Stop Believin’” - Journey
“Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun” - Beastie Boys
“Bombs Over Baghdad” - Outkast
“One” - U2

There are tons, TONS, of others, but these are the ones that make me wish my car stereo’s volume went to 11.

The song that comes to mind the quickest (and because I don’t want to go downstairs to look at my CDs to refresh my memory) is We’ll Meet Again sung be Vera Lynn. We played it for a military retirement where I work and I thought it was wonderfully appropriate. The version we used was downloaded from Napster by my 14-year-old and even he was taken by it. We played it about a hundred times at home and then did a comparison with the version available on a Vera Lynn CD. It’s different and not as good IMHO. This is starting to sound a little obsessive I know. Here are the words (from the point of view of a soldier going off to war):
We’ll meet again, don’t know where, don’t know when,
but I know we’ll meet again some sunny day.
Keep smiling through just like you always do
and I know we’ll meet again some sunny day!
And will you please say hello to the folks that I know,
tell them I won’t be long (this is where I tear up),
they’ll be happy to know that as you saw me go
I was singing this song!
We’ll meet again, don’t know where, don’t know when,
but I’ll know we’ll meet again some sunny day!

Anything by Gordon Lightfoot seems to come to mind right now.

I’ll agree with Euty on Gordon Lightfoot songs.

“Through the Eyes of Ruby” by Smashing Pumpkins
“Scarborough Faire” Simon and Garfunkel
“Novacaine for the Soul” Eels

I’ll think of more later.

Lenny - Stevie Ray Vaughn
Thrill Is Gone - BB King
If You Love Me - Van Morrison and BB King version
Bolero - Ravel
Somebody & Home - Depeche Mode
Wicked Games - Chris Issak
In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel
Kashmir - Led Zepplin
Fade to Black & Fuel - Metallica

I’m including a few repeats, but I agreed so hard I had to repost them. But I’ve got a few others which, to my surprise, no one has mentioned yet.

If I Had A Million Dollars Barenaked Ladies. Always makes me smile, and brings back good concert memories too.
Rainbow Connection Kermit the frog. Always loved it anyway, then a friend’s parents played it after her funeral. Now it’s gut-wrenching, but still beloved.
Good Mother Jann Arden When I had the attention span of a gnat and could enjoy nothing when I was sick for a time, I could listen to this song. It’s empowering and happy.
Amy Pure Prairie League Sheer happiness.
The Metro Berlin. I dunno, just gets me going.
Let The Day Begin The Call. I cannot hear this song without blasting the volume. I’ve even been known to play air guitar, something I mock OTHER people for.
Run Around Sue Can’t remember the artist. This song makes me wish I could swing or shag. You brits, I mean the SOUTHERN kind of shagging.
Born to Boogie Hank Jr. Shame on every damn one of you for not including it. :stuck_out_tongue:

I second Dance with Me, In Your Eyes, The Ghost in You, The Dance and anything by Neil Diamond that excludes Streisand, or the phrases “heart light” or “blue jeans.”

What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong.

Del Shannon. And what is the Southern kind of shagging, anyway?

Something by the Beatles.

And yes, for those not familiar with the Beatles, that is the name of the song. I once called in to a radio station and requested this, and the DJ asked, “So you don’t care which song?”
Me - “Yes, I care, I want to hear Something by the Beatles.”
Her - “Ok, but we have a lot of Beatles songs, do you care which one I play?”
Me - “SOMETHING.”
This went on for another 5 minutes like a bad Abbott and Costello bit.

I also love Imagine by John Lennon
Sister Golden Hair Surprise by America(?)
Hey Jude, Yesterday, and The Long and Winding Road all by the Beatles.
American Pie by Don McLean(?)
Layla by Derek and the Dominoes

I’m sure I’ll think of some more later.

It’s a lot like swing dancing, I guess. What you dance to when there’s great beach music on. It’s a southern thing.

Yeah, there’s this song by Alabama, all about “Dancing, shaggin’ on the boulevard” and even though I know what they mean by shagging I can’t help but think of screwing in the street.

SRV’s version of “Little Wing”
Gotta agree with “Greensleeves”
“Asturias” However, I must add that true classics really should not count.
I’ll also throw in “Danny Boy,” but that’s because my Grandmother sang it to me all the time when I was a boy. (Obviously, my first name is Daniel and my Grandmother is pretty damn Irish.)

The Pro’s and Cons by Roger Waters (the complete CD)
and Life without You by SRV.

some the titles in this thread remind me of great songs that I never think of when I’m buying cd’s…

Thanks!!
