It’s a reference to the Fourteen Words, a racial survival vow popular with white pride types.
I appreciate the thought, but the apology isn’t necessary. Like I said, I’m surprised that a few people seemed to be questioning the ban in terms of the hate speech issue. I think we’ve been pretty clear about where the line is in terms of how posters express their views, and this guy was way over the line.
The guy stated his opinion. Right or wrong, isn’t this what the board’s all about basically? If you don’t agree with his statements (Which I don’t) just close the thread. Don’t read any more of it.
Isn’t this getting too close to censorship?
I know, I know, that there are limits to what can be posted, but this guy presented his material in an intelligent, polite manner. I don’t think he was being a troll or a jerk, he was just putting his message (right or wrong) in front of the public.
I must restate that I do **not **agree with him or his philosophy, but his right to say it. Anywhere. Maybe especially on this board.
I don’t care about Neo-Nazis being banned. I’m not interested in reading their drivel, which isn’t even amusing, contrarily to some conspiracy theories, for instance.
If anything I find the moderation too lenient, specifically with comments about Muslims and/or Arabs that would never pass muster if they were about another group.
And if you used “88” in that context, nobody would have a problem with that. If I say “The Dodgers won the World Series in '88,” it is obvious I am using the number 88 to denote the year an event took place.
If I say “9/11 was a tragic event that killed many people” you know I am referring to the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2011, in New York City, Washington, and Pennsylvania. If I say “Someone is hurt, call 911” you know I am referring to the emergency phone number. If I say “With taxes, the iPad cost me $911” you know I am referring to a sum of money. All the same digits, but all with different meaning obvious to any person with a degree of smarts, beause of context.
A person espousing Nazi beliefs signing off with “14/88” is obviously using it in the context of what it means to the present-day white supremacist movement. There’s a point at which you have to use your head.
Nothing new there. Neo-Nazis have been trying to combine their thang with Æsatru for as far back as I can remember. David Lane, Varg Vikernes, etc. The list goes on.
