Don’t mean to sound self-centered here (however, to quote Zaphod Beeblebrox “If there is anything here more important than my ego, I want it hunted down and shot!”), but I’ve wondered about this…
If I post to a thread that has, say, 50 responses, then leave and come back a day later to see if anyone has responded to my post… I have to scroll thru 50 responses that I have already read before I find mine, and can begin to read the responses that I have not yet seen!
Any way around this? Sometimes, in a thread that is 4 or 5 pages long, it takes me a while to find out where I left off, and begin the new responses…
[demanding 3-year-old moment]I wanna skip the posts I have already read!!! I wanna find the new ones NOW!!! NOW!!!{/demanding 3-year-old moment]
In your browser you could try “find in page” for your user name, clicking “find next” until you saw your last post. I doubt it would save you much time but it would be satisfyingly self-centred.
This may work for you.
On the last post you’ve read in a particular thread, hover your mouse over the quote button.
Take down the number where it shows postid=955282 or whatever.
Then in the location bar at the top add the following to the end of the URL: #post955282.
Press enter and it should bring the post with that number to the top of the page.
Then bookmark it.
Then you can use your bookmark to take you back to where you left off. You’ll probably have to clean your bookmarks out a lot though.
OK, Jim slipped in here as I was cooking up an incredibly long post to say what he did in a sentence or two. Kudos, Jim. Anyway, just so I’ve got something to show for the last half hour, here’s the form of the URL you’ll want to use with a postid:
Another tip that might help if you are using Netscape 4.7 or something close to that. Set up a personal toolbar. I have several buttons on mine but the important one is the Temp button. When I’m researching something or just want to come back to a URL later, I drag the little bookmark icon onto the Temp button. That way all the link are in the same place and I can clean them out a lot easier.
I may be able to, but I’ve had Navigator for a long time and I don’t remember at what point certain feature became available and how long some of what I see has been carried over from upgrade to upgrade.
But, here goes. If you click the View menu selection and the top item is Show and when you hover over Show and a secondary menu shows up and the first 3 items on that menu are Navigation Toolbar, Location Toolbar, and Personal Toolbar, then we are at least starting on the same page. Make sure there is a check mark beside each item.
Now:[ol][li]Click the Bookmarks button and selct edit bookmarks[]Do one of the following:
[]If you have an Item named Personal Toolbar, right click it.[]If not:[ul][]Right click the top item.[]Click New Folder…[]In the properties box, change the name to Personal Toolbar[]Click OK[]Now, right click the Personal Toolbar[]Select Set as Toolbar Folder[/ul][]There is no item ‘C’, Hi Opal.[/ol][]Select New Folder…[]Change Name to Temp and click OK
[/li]There should be 3 toolbars, the 1st has the Back, Forward, … buttons, the 2nd has the Bookmarks button plus the location bar and the 3rd has at least your Temp button.
If you are still with me at this point, you’re a better man/person than I.
So, now how to use the thing. [ul][li]Visit any web page[]Put your mouse one the little icon next to the word Location on the Location Toolbar.[]The cursor should turn into a hand[]Drag that icon to the Temp button[]It should open a secondary menuDrop the icon on the secondary menu[/ul]Now when you click the Temp button, everything you have dropped in there is just one more click away. You can make as many buttons as you want. I have 10. My Straight Dope button has items for each forum, the homepage, the main forum list, and the People of the SD page.[/li]
If anyone is still interested and I lost you somewhere along the line, then let me know where you fell off the track and I’ll try to get you back going again.
