Is there any SONG that we ALL would agree is good (if not great)?

I’ve never been a fan of Pink Floyd. That one isn’t something that makes me change the station, but I don’t like it either.

I’d vote for it, although I prefer “Thunder Road”.

As in against it. Runnin’ Down a Dream. It finished 7th in a poll on the site I alluded to earlier; I think it blows every single other song of his completely out of the water.

Listen to the whole song. I’s a call for black and female empowerment, and that’s what Aretha asks to have “Respect” for.

I meant the title on the OP, as in the song also has to appeal to racists and misogynists.

D’oh, I totally misunderstood that, sorry. :man_facepalming:

No worries! I think MOST people would be ok with the song but as you said, some aren’t going to be.

Fair enough, but the premise of the thread is any song that “we” all would agree is good. Do we even have any posters named Brandy?

Could someone direct me to the recent bass/bassline thread here in Cafe Society. I don’t want to pull up some old one.

Thank you

To the OP’s question: IMO, no. Not only are people different, individual people’s tastes change over time. It’s no more likely than a unanimous popular vote in a national election. (Actually, that outcome’s probably more likely than it used to be.)

That said, I can’t imagine not liking this:

Absolutely yes to My Girl and Wish You Were Here. Great suggestions!

Excellent choice!

Yes.

Low bar.

Nothing against “My Girl”, but as Temptations songs go, it isn’t in the same ballpark as “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.”

Absolutely not. There is no way you will get universal, 'like this song" I do not think.

Of your three choices I only like one (although I have songs I like from all of them…just not those).

I am amazed at how my 25-30 year-old niece and nephews are clueless of songs from the era of the OP. Except for the Beatles I doubt they’d even recognize any of those bands.

If I HAD to pick then probably something from Fleetwood Mac. Perhaps the best pop band of all time and still played a lot today at parties and street fairs so most people, I think, would be familiar with them. There’s lots to choose from. Almost anything off of “Rumours” album probably. But, willing to bet there are many who would not like it.

Pretty easy going tunes. Not a lot to hate even if it is not your jam.

ETA: I was on vacation a couple weeks ago with friends and we were playing tunes. I played a fun instrumental I thought woudl be impossible to dislike and immediately was asked to turn it off. Surprised me.

One of my earlier comments suggested that the time, place, and emotional state a person is in when a song is popular or in rotation is likely to be a big factor in how the song is regarded. For example, “Born to Run” is great because you were getting your sought-after divorce at the time.

Now it occurs to me that a good/great song ought to be good/great independently of who performs it. Boston’s “More Than A Feeling” fails because that Glee episode massacred it. OTOH, I’ve never heard a bad cover of The Producers’ “She-Sheila.” (Surprisingly, there are several cover versions out there.) I’m not suggesting that “She-Sheila” is great, just that it passes that one test.

“Layla” is a decent song, but Eric Clapton himself removed it from being a great song when he slowed it down so one person could perform it. (I know, I know…but I’m trying to be generous and gracious here while providing a real-world example.)

I like “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” too, but I bet more people like “My Girl.”

Patches?

This Jenny, however, is quite nice.

The Temptations had so many fantastic songs, I don’t think it’s even only between these two songs.

Happy Days Are Here Again

One of those songs written during the Depression that was designed to give you a boost in your morale when you really needed it. And you got to admit, it works. You just want to sing along - most people jump right to the chorus, omitting that stormy, minor key introduction.
