As a lifelong Packers fan, usually I’m very interested in the Super Bowl (go ahead, boo me if you want). However, this year…
a) The Patriots and Seahawks are playing. Two teams that have arguably been the class of their respective conferences all season. Two teams that I am, at worst, neutral toward and sometimes actively pull for. But right now, if I hear any more about Deflate-gate, I may lose my lunch. And the Packer’s loss two weeks ago was painful enough (think Bill Simmons-fourteen-levels-of-losing painful) without me having to hear any more from Seattle fans than I already have (thank goodness I was sleeping through it because I had to go to work that night).
b) I am, as of now, in the middle of what is essentially a 65-hour work week. If I get home early tomorrow, go to church and then go right to sleep, I might wake up in time for the kickoff. I don’t have to work Sunday night, but I may still be running on fumes.
c) If the game were on CBS or Fox, no problem. I’d still stay at home and watch it, because, it’s still the freaking Super Bowl. Unfortunately, it’s on NBC, and the lousy station that’s allegedly my local affiliate has a lousy translator station with a lousy signal which I can’t get. So watching it at home is out.
d) Would I go out and watch it? Maybe, but everyone I know who I would want to watch it with has plans, and everyone I could conceivably watch it with, I wouldn’t want to spend 4-5 hours with for that. Going out to a restaurant or bar… overpriced food and drinks, drunken noisy crowds, plus some jagoff waitress or bartender interrupting the commercials with some PA announcement turned up to 12 so I couldn’t even enjoy the commercials properly? Plus my aforementioned energy level? I’ll probably pass.
Bottom line, I’m slightly interested in the game (and I know it’s actually a really good matchup, with the potential to be a classic), but actually there’s like a 5% chance I’ll actually watch. If anything, I’ll stay home and listen to the radio call (and there’s no guarantee I’ll even do that).
Sorry, league, maybe next year.
