Is there interest in an East TN fest?

That’s a good idea… I suck at driving to begin with. Email sent.

directions to Barley’s - I-40 (either westbound or eastbound) take the James White Parkway Exit. (If you’re westbound on 40, this is a left-side-of-the-road-exit). Either way you approach the Parkway, you will be sent in the same direction (behind downtown and towards the river). From the parkway, you want the Summitt Hill exit, (first exit you come to, I believe). From the exit ramp, you want to turn right, going towards downtown on Summit Hill. You will take the first right, at a traffic light, onto Central Ave. Enjoy the short trip through the very small Old City district coming up. Two blocks on Central, and you will come to a 4-way stop intersection with Jackson Ave. Turn right on Jackson. Barley’s is on the right, about 6 or so buildings down. At this point, park it where you can find it. Street parking is free, but hard to come by. Lot parking runs between $3-$5.

I’m going to go ahead and confirm morelin and I as attendees. She’s asked off, I made reservations. Orbitz found me a Motel 6 like 5 miles away from Barley’s for less than $50 a night, very good price. And why pay a lot, when we don’t plan to hang out there?

Okay… I’m bored, so here’s an update:

It’ll be at Barley’s on Saturday, June 14th 2003 at 7:30pm.

The definites, so far are: Aesiron; Ashkicker and her husband; evilbeth; fizzestothetop; impunha; GMRuyjin; Morelin; JohnT and family; Lsura; Nothing Man; and Spit. (14)

And the people we’re still not sure about are: 100watts; AutoXer; JessEnigma; Joey G; Ludo; Max Carnage; Nocturne; Reinhold Messner; ShadiRoxan; Slainte; and Sophie. (11)

This is from Lsura’s previous list so I might be missing some changes. Speak up if I have you in the wrong category.

Aesiron,

I posted above… count me out. Thanks.

I also don’t think I’ll be able to come. Maybe next time.

Sorry 'bout that Slainte. I should’ve read to make sure but in addition to being terminally bored, I’m also rather lazy.

I’m sorry you can’t make it. You too, JessEnigma. It would’ve been fun.

Okay, well count me out for that weekend.

You guys do realize that it’s Father’s Day weekend, right?

You know, if we’re going to do it, we need a catchy name. Like RockyDope or something.

Eeek. To be honest I didn’t know. I still think I will be able to get off from work. I will talk to them about that tomorrow.

I’ve been calling it the Knoxdope, GMRyujin.

I was totally unaware of it being Father’s Day weekend. I can still make it but not everyone might. Should we reschedule?

It’s been VolDope in my mind . And I had no idea that was Father’s day weekend. It doesn’t interfere with my ability to attend.

Just a note, though, for anyone coming in from out of town and unfamiliar with the Knoxville interstates (I already told Aesiron this) - they’ve been cracking down on speeders in the construction zone lately. I believe that it currently starts at Cedar Bluff Road and continues to Papermill Rd, but I’m not positive of those points. If you’re coming from the south/west, pay attention and watch for cops!

I plan on doing about 120 mph, myself.

I can assure you, you don’t want to get caught speeding in the backwoods of TN. Or stop in the backwoods of TN for any reason. And if you hear banjos, just run!

Interesting story about Tennessee backwoods.

Last weekend punha and I were returning from Chidope and we were on I75 in Kentucky. Well we were supposed to take the exit for Corbin and shoot down through Middlesboro to Virginia. Well after you’ve been on the interstate for so long you get kinda brainwashed, so I missed the exit completely. After awhile I realized I shouldn’t be seeing so many signs for Knoxville. We got about 50 miles from Knoxville before we realized we had missed out exit and 50 miles from Knoxville is a hell of a long way from my house.

So we stop in Jellico (did they spell Jericho wrong?) Tennessee to get gas and figure out a new game plan. We take a look at our trusty Rand McNally road map and decide to get on US 25 south to Lafalette (sp?) and go to Virginia that way.

Lemme tell you, US 25 is not a road you want to travel on after dark. I could just hear the banjos strumming away quietly in the mountains. We went as fast as we could, which wasn’t very fast at all cause it was a very curvy road, to get to Lafalette (sp?). And for half the drive there was a car with a blue light shining in it following us. For the longest time we thought it was a statey but it was just some freaky car with a blue light.

Turns out we could’ve just stayed on 75 and taken an exit for Lafalette (sp?) but we didn’t see that on the map. D’oh!:smack:

Anyway, that’ll probably be the way we go to Knoxfest in June, only we won’t be taking US 25. It was almost as scary as West Virginia!

So yes, beware of backroads in Tennessee.

I wound up on one of those roads in the backwoods of Louisiana, thanks to stupid Mapquest. It wasn’t even paved, it was just a gravel road out in the middle of the swamp. But it got me where I needed to go. Scary stuff, though, no lights around for miles or anything.

Banjos nahhh. That’s to classy. It’s when you hear the wooden spoons and a bunch of chicken fights going on, that’s when you should run.

Lsura’s right about the construction zone. I went out west last night and they had someone pulled over on my way out and someone else on the way back. The speed limit is supposedly 45. So, to keep up with traffic, you’ll be going about 15 mph over the limit when they stop you. Genius, that is.

Actually said to morelin

“Just let me do the talkin’, I’m a native yokel, these are my people.”

What’s sad and scary is that there are plenty of those kinds of roads here in Cleveland and I’m pretty sure that this is one of the fifteen largest cities in Tennessee. (which doesn’t say much at all, but still)
