In my opinion, this is promoting illegal activity, which is against forum rules. I’m not going to get into the “legal in some states, but not on a federal level” argument. As I understand it, cannabis edibles are currently illegal in the nation of Canada until December 2019.
So, what are the moderators opinions on this thread? I believe it should be closed to further comments, since it is promoting currently llegal activity under both U. S. and Canadian law. I will, of course, abide by the ruling of the moderators.
It is a cruise, and he didn’t say WHERE, exactly, he plans to indulge. It might be in international waters. You don’t know. It’s just an assumption on your part. Also, it is already legal for recreational use in California, Washington, and Alaska. So, even if he is in U.S. waters when he smokes, if he is off the coast of any of those 3 states, he is legal.
[del]I am certain that the board has always judged threads based on the laws of the USA and Illinois.[/del] I see Colibri has posted in it ‘as a moderator’ and not closed it. Perhaps the mods have mellowed.
Curious why you started this thread instead of just reporting it.
In your opinion, which you are free to give. I’m mainly interested in moderators’ opinions, however. I’m free to ask questions about a thread, no matter how weird you think they are.
Is it against US law for a US citizen to consume cannabis in a country other then the US?
After vacationing in Jamaica and getting the third degree returning through customs/immigration, I “bragged” that I smoked nearly non-stop in Jamaica (where it was illegal, if not really enforced) but was too smart to attempt to bring any home with me. My luggage was still examined with a fine-toothed comb, but the officer did not initiate my arrest.
ETA: Just wanted to say, there is a lot of good information being shared responsibly in that thread.
IMO say 3-5 years back it would have been closed or possibly sent off to the cornfield. But I have an idea/guess that TPTB here are having some of the same struggles the people in law enforcement sometimes face with the subject. You almost have to look past the rule and at the intent. And overall the intent of the thread seems fairly benign.
Talking about what cannabis to try presumably in a area where it is legal does not seem to be to be promoting a illegal activity, but actually promoting doing the activity legally. Traveling outside the country to where it is legal to do so, as part of a trip seems perfectly legal in Chicago.
However, it is not currently legal in Canada, where Paul in Qatar will be next week.
I have no problem with the subject being discussed. The agree that the replies are mostly responsible. I’m just curious about the permissibility of discussing it within the rules, especially given the quote from engineer_comp_geek above. However, it seems the point will become moot in Canada in December, and in Chicago in January, so it seems the mods may be cutting some slack in this area. In this case, I withdraw my opinion that the thread should be closed.
Historically, we have taken a fairly hard line on cannabis threads, since our owners do not want us to be known for that kind of “dope”. It hasn’t helped that the legal status of cannabis in the U.S. is murky at best, with many states legalizing it, but the federal government keeping it illegal.
We actually had a fairly lengthy discussion of this thread in the mod loop. Cannabis is presently legal in Chicago (where the SDMB is based), and despite federal laws disagreeing with this, the federal government is allowing its use in Chicago, at least for the time being. Public opinion about cannabis has also changed fairly dramatically in the past few years. With all of this in mind, our admin feels that it is time for us to loosen up our restrictions on discussions about cannabis.
In this particular case, the legalities are a bit off, since cannabis edibles will not be for sale legally until December. But the main point of the thread is not how to obtain said edibles. The point of the thread is really advice about use, which is more of a generic question. Sure, we could clamp down on the thread just because the dates are off by a few months, but as long as everyone is posting responsibly in the thread, we felt that overall, the thread is best left open.
Admittedly, we are still trying to figure out exactly where to draw the lines in this changing landscape. For now, we are basically putting the line at anything you can do in front of a law enforcement officer in Chicago and not get in trouble for it. We will see how that works out going forward.
Your response is so interesting of how a artificial line was drawn in the sand, then another (talking about laws, not the SD policy, though the SD policy was based on the law, yet this reply). Or in other words legality vs morality. If anything over the years pot has gotten stronger yet more people re seeing nothing wrong with partaking, and a good number of them seeing it as a benefit.
